Default Ohio Model Planes Giant Edge 540 P

What a great kit to build!

Who else is building one / wants one?

Mine will have a Moki 2.10 and a standard muffler from Horizon.
The tail surface servos will be Futaba 9303 and JR 4131.

Hopefully I'll have this ready for Elliot, MS on October 20th.

Please post your weight of the Giant 540P so we can run the numbers on various engine combinations (wing loading, prop loading, Thrust/weight, etc.) The Website only says 11 + pounds.....not much help.
Thanks

JP,

Is that Darren Eaton's plane? I think the weight on his was 13 lbs with an OS 1.6, and he builds light.

I have one going together with an OS BGX that I had laying around going on it. Hopefully it'll be a good motor for it, I know it's heavy. It is probably 7 years old but has never been fired. Any experience with this motor. I'm running 645MG's all around with split ailerons.

Default Edge 540

I'm building one now and I'm going to install a Saito 180 in it. I started on the wing first while waiting for the engine. It builds pretty straight forward except that you have to unpin the spar from the building board then installing the provided wing jig. I've never had to do this before and believe that if the wing jig was the proper height the spar could have stayed pinned to the board. It also seems that the last 2 ribs may be slightly smaller then they should be and that this is part of the problem. The holes in the ribs for the wing tube are too large but I just put some tape around the tube before gluing it into place. The finished wing came out straight and light built per the instructions. Starting on the fuse next now that the motor is here.

Default wing and weight

The final weight of mine and Darin Eaton's plane was just shy of 12 lbs. Mine was 1 oz under 12 lbs dry and Darins was just under 12 wet. Both planes have OS 160s in them

The wing ribs and design are correct in this design. The reason the last two ribs raise off the board at the spar location is because the spar is not at the peak thickness of the wing as you get closer to the tip. The airfoil design calls for this and the building procedure is explained that way. The wing jig is also correct and used properly, the wing will build quickly and straight. Sounds like it worked out fine for you. You will be amazed at how this airfoil acts in the air! It makes 3D and aerial ballet a piece of cake!

It was taken at Thistle Downs' fly under the lights a month or so ago.

Default video

Send me an email to [email protected] with video in the subject.
Takes me a while to send it so the way I figure it will easier to CC it to several at once.

Kelly, [email protected] will not accept a file this large.........Bounced right back

Wayne, Terry you should have it

Default video now online

Folks, Mike Bell's video has been uploaded and converted to an AVI format so it's only 4.7 megs. It can be downloaded from the OMP website at

http://www.ohiomodelplanes.com/gs540p.html

Also, the OS 160 will pull the aircraft out of a hover very well. Gotta use an 18-6 prop (Pro-Zinger works the best). Wouldn't say it's balistic but plenty strong enough to hover down to the ground with confidence. Just watch the video and you will see.

Default !!!

Great footage!!!

It looked like the bats were enjoying the smell of Nitro.

Where was the location ?- a ball park?

Mike,
Oxford, MS has 4 of your OMP kits with 1 built and flying and mine will be in the air soon!
Thanks for a Giant Profile.
I've had fun with a Tower Hobbies "Extra Special" for quite some time now and have always wanted an affordable Giant profile. You guys have filled the bill.

Where was the location ?- a ball park?
Thistle Downs, just outside Napoleon Ohio.
They rent several stadium lights a couple time a year.
This was taken after hours at their giant scale meet.
They had heli rides, many food concessions, vendors, 2 newspapers, a TV station (I only saw one paper reporter but I heard of the others) and maybe 1500+ spectators in the 2 days. This is in addition to some fine flyin' and some of the finest hospitality my family and I have came across.
One heck of a show boys and girls!

Mike
