OMP Fusion 3D build
Ok guys, I haven't built a plane for 2 years, But the new OMP Fusion has really got that something to make me come out of building "retirement"
Omp just keeps comming out with new designs that fly well and thats making it tough on us guys that don't build much!
This thing is truley a work of art, like a puzzle. The fuse side are a combination of 1/16 basla interlocked into plywood,
and everything fits so well this might be just fun to build! One warning though, you might not want to leave this kit around
your Grandma, she might think its a puzzle and go to work on it!, On the other hand maybe you ought to leave it out and
it will be built in the morning.
This shows the interlocking pieces and the finished fuse sides.

RE: OMP Fusion 3D build
If you use pull-pull on the elevator then you'll only be doing inside loops. Occasionally you'll want to push as well!
Just kidding. No this does not use pull-pull cables on the elevators. The kit comes with a torque rod system that works both elevators from one servo. The first dozen kits went out with a solid carbon shaft which has been determined to flex too much from side to side. This needs to be replaced with an 8-32 bolt instead and 8-32 nuts to secure the control horns. Alternatively two elevator servos can be used. The manual does explain the installation and use of two elevator servos also.

The next step is to make the 2 carbon fiber beams, they are made from 2 pieces of 1/8 x 3/4 balsa with a thin CF strip laminated between.
The simple motor mount, I widened the opening 1/8" to accomodate the YS 110
The foam and middle/bottom CF beams against a strait edge to ensure the bottom is strait, very important!

RE: OMP Fusion 3D build
I used a laminate router to cut out the servo mounts smoothly.
The 2 left side servo mounts epoxied in place
I ran the fuse through the drum sander to scuff the foam for gluing

The fuse is then covered with Gorilla glue as thin as is possible to spread
The fuse sheeting is then glued to the foam and i weighted it down with a bunch of
1-1/2" thick heavy oak planks, at least 300 pounds.

The gorrilla glue foams and expands greatly as it cures. This is the reason for the weight so it doesnt slide around as it expands.
I am going to use 1/8" robart hinge points, is there anything else?

Maybe a dumb question but, why do you have to have that much weight on it? [:-]

RE: OMP Fusion 3D build
Good chose on the hinge points, I have a OMP 65" YAK that I used CA hinges on and after about a year of 55 degrees throw on the elevator and rudder they started breaking. I replaced one after another, after 4 broke I cut out all the CA's on the elevator and rudder and replaced them with hinge points. Have not done the ailerons yet but probably will soon.
That is a great looking plane, I think I'll ((((NEED)))) one soon.

RE: OMP Fusion 3D build
I have the radio south 1/4 scale ca hinges on mine and I've used them on many profiles with success. I would recommend putting the hinge points on the rudder though. On my fusion and my profile ultimate I have torn the bottom 2 ca hinges on the rudder from pulling too hard on take offs and rudder touches. The rudder takes a lot of abuse mostly beacuse It HAKE's so sweet

RE: OMP Fusion 3D build
I agree with Tom on the rudder! I have also found the rudder abuses the hinges more than people think. Plus doing the 9 occasionally or harrier landings is hard on it as well. One thing I've done also is double up the ca hinges on the bottom and top of the rudder. otherwise the small hinge points or flat dubro hinges are nice. personally I am always very skeptical about drilling holes in the back of the stab for hinge points on profiles. Given the fact the stab is only 3/8" thick to begin with, drilling a hole through the wood weakens it tremendously in my opinion. OK to do on ailerons and rudder but I don't do it on the elevators.

RE: OMP Fusion 3D build
I used the robart hinge points on my Fusion. I absolutely love them! For the elevator / rudder on my fusion, I added a triangle stock to the trailing edge of the stab and the leading edge of the control surface. This does 2 things. It gives you a really great gapless edge, and it gives you some extra wood to bite into with the hinge points.
I doubt I'll ever go back to CA hinges.

The forward wing sheeting is built under the ribs so you dont have to turn the wing over to sheet the other side, Genius!
All the ribs are cut very nice and this wing just falls together so easy!

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't get around to projects on the building board. Keep going Steve! It's evident that this bird isn't going to take forever to slap together!
Now I need to seriously start clearing my schedule up so I can build my little Edge.
