foam core fuse scratch build (need help)
Hi everyone, I am building a scratch build profile I need to know if my engine and landing gear mounts are going to be strong enough, they will be epoxyed in and the sides will be sheeted with 1mm balsa on each side with wood glue, heres some pics
Regards
Darren
PS: I will be fitting a .40 size engine on it

What is the lenght of fuse and weight? You may want to use light-ply instaed of balsa. May be a good idea to tie the engine mount in with landing gear mount with wood???? Let us know how you procede. Thanks Capt,n

I agree......sheet both sides with lite ply, and bring the sheeting passed the leading edge of the wing, all the way back to the wing spar.
You may also want to install a piece of carbon fiber rod, the entire length of the fuse........remember, foam is very lite, but has no strength!
Good luck with this build, and keep the pics coming...I am doing the exact thing........COINCIDENCE.....I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!![X(][X(]

RE: foam core fuse scratch build (need help)
IMO Light ply is not needed for this application. I have scratch built several profiles with a foam core fues. I did my engine mount area a bit different (lighter). And I only sheeted 4" of the center section of the fues with 1/16th balsa. I did not have an airfoiled wing I opted for a flat piece of foam strategically sheeted with 1"16th balsa. The idea was to make it fly like a glow powered shock flyer. I powered it with a pro .46 and it flew AMAZING. The only problem was you cant really cover it very well so I just lightly painted the 1/16th balsa to fuel proof it. Just look at these 3D Bipes that everyone is going crazy over. Its done on the same format. Just a few years later
Word of advice if you opt to do this...put some CF in the center of the flat wing then sheet.

The one I made (Bill Mixon designed it) didnt look like a Hots, it was based on the Yak and was every bit as good as an OMP profile. I will search my files and see if I can find pictures (its been about 2 years since I did it).
Wing Span 48"
Fues Length was around 45"
Engine used Pro .46 (TONS OF POWER)
(5 Min. later)
Cant find any pictures but I have been wanting to build another one. I will buy the foam and start a build thread next week with more detailed instructions. Be easy on me b/c I am trying to cover my 92" hybrid at the same time and the DA-50 is on the way!! Plus, I do have a career and I am married (unlike the last time I built one). The wife will be sooooo happy about me taking up the table AGAIN

Through the magic of RCU I have managed to search all the way back to 2003 and find my post and picture of my all foam flat wing yak.
There have only been three of these built. Bill did the first one, I did the other two (he flies better than me )

RE: foam core fuse scratch build (need help)
In my opinion the thicker foam makes it look more aggressive , does any1 else support this opinion?

I think a good radius put on the thick fuse edges may male it look and fly better.... I do not know that for sure??? Capt,n
