Default sledge vs omp edge

i've been looking at the morris hobbies sledge and i just saw the omp edge. to me these two seem very similar. i was hoping some people would have some opinions on them and how they are the same and different in their building and their flying. i'm looking for a good 3d plane. i've read great things about the sledge on this forum but no flight reports on the omp edge.
all opinions appreciated. thanks.

Default sledge vs omp edge

I have a Sledge and have flown an OMP Edge.
The Sledge IMO is a much better plane.
Sledge feels lighter in the air and has a slightly longer tail moment making it more stable.

Say wgeffon
Is there anything (maneuver-wise) that the Sledge is not particularly good at? How is it in the wind compared to say a full bodied plane of similar size such as a GP CAP/Extra or Sig Something Xtra, etc.

(I'm mounting the servos in my Sledge right now)

i have both of these planes , the omp edge is just absolutely awsome. it will do it all climbing flat spins tumbles harriers, you name it it will do it and hovers like a dream.
not putting the sledge down now it is a good plane also , as of my expirernce with it , it does not do the tumbles or the flat spins as well. i do believe that it hovers a little easier.
i would build another omp edge but would not build another sledge. if you have any specific questions feel free to ask me.

I was wondering how hard the sledge is to build. I have only ARF experience. I'm a fair pilot but have never built anything. I'm not getting the 3D thrill with my somethin extra and am looking for something to build. The morris sledge looks aweasome. I've read good things here on RCU about the Morris sledge.

I can give you a one word flight report on the OMP edge... The word is...WOW!!!
I have a 46fx with a macs tuned pipe and standard futaba flight pack. Spins, tumbles, knife edge, hover.... Heck, I know they are both nice planes, but my OMP edge rocks!!

the sledge is real easy to build all the major parts are laser cut. i had mine stick up in 2 evenings.

the omp is not much harder to build just doesnt have as many laser cut parts and you have to cut a few.

heck i believe anyone could build either of tehse planes with ease.

coony,
since you have both i do have a few questions for you. which one has a thicker airfoil?? and can you compare how the each handle snap rolls??
i was leaning towards the sledge, but the omp edge is 50 bucks cheaper. also wgeffon commented on the sledge was more stable, have you noticed this??
thanks,
tony

The sledge has all the included hardware, tank, landing gear and so forth... I think the OMP edge is wood only.....

That would account for the price difference.

I am building a OMP 540 and I agree with Paul the lack of any hardware make up the price difference. But I did get to use my choice of hardware for what that is worth.

Would you guys say that the hardware that comes with the sledge would cost $50?? - I kinda doubt it

All of the Sledge's hardware is quality stuff. It includes pull-pull set-ups for both the elevator and rudder. The one thing that it does not include is a tail wheel or tail wheel bracket (hardware for a tail skid is included).

CAP232CM: It is hard to say that the Sledge would be a good first builder kit. If you have access to an experienced modeler/builder who would be willing to field your questions AND you are a patient person who enjoys challenges (in a good sort of way) then go for it. The Sledge is a cutting "edge" design IMO that to me is exciting to build. It is ultra light weight with quite a bit of 1/16 inch balsa sheeting, so you can't be hamfisted! Your reward is a very light highly engineered aircraft.

No, the hardware isn't the best quality! The pull pull cables are ok. They can keep there hardware and I'll buy the hardware and pocket the rest of the $50 bucks!
Dubros hardware is the best!!
Also, I'll stick with the Crazy Legs landing gear!

The current OMP kit comes with all the wood you need plus prebent wire landing gear, wire elevator joiner, and wire tail skid.
You just need the pushrods, control horns, clevises, etc.

the airfoil on the sledge is tapered from the root to tip , but starts out the same thicknees as the omp. the omp just has a tapered trailing edge.
as for snap rolls i like the way the omp snaps, it like a funfly. the sledge is more of a precision flying machine. i like them wild like the omp.
as for a first kit to build they don't get much easier than a profile to build in my opinion. they are both easy to build!!!

coony
can you give me a little more info about how each plane snaps??
this will be my first fun fly, so i don't know what you mean by "its like a funfly".
i'm flying a U CAN DO 3D and an aeroworks edge. the ucd snaps are wide, slow and not crisp. the edge snaps are very tigh, fast and crisp, even on low rates.
can you desricbe the snaps please.
thanks
tony

well , the omp seems to have a big rolling snap where the sledge was kinda tighter. i havent flown the sledge since i crashed it about 2 months ago ( engine died at wrong time) i cant realy desribe the difference without you just putting your hands on both planes. the easiest way to describe it is the sledge is more prcision of a plane where the omp will take the stick banging of a funfly

I have a OMP 540 with 46fx with macs muffler and stock futuba flight pac run on 5 cells. 4 lbs right on the money. This thing is fun. I was flying a sig se and had a hard time hovering with it. On the 2 tank i was hovering a ft off the deck with the 540.
The smaps are really not snaps. Fun flys dont like to stall the wing. It just kinda drives through the snap. If your looking for snap go back to flying your aw. If you want to laugh while your flying then get the OMP. I have never flown the sledge but i have seen pics and i dont like the way the fuse looks. Thats just me.
You cant go wrong with either kit. Untill you have both i dont think your gonna know the diff.
hope this helps.

click on the www on the bottom to see pics of my 540

You've got something seriously WRONG!!! if your Fun Fly does not snap quick and sharp. With the thick leading edge of a FunFly, you can stall the leading edge so that your Fun Fly will snap so quick that its difficult to stay with it. A Fun Fly will out snap any IMACC plane, otherwise you're doing something wrong! Serious WRONG!

Try some stroke in your control surfaces and back off of the throttle. You're not suppose to perform snaps a full throttle. The pwr to weight ratio of a FunFly will pull it through a snap, so back off of the throttle, increase you strokes and try again.

Default You're doing something wrong

I say again - if you can't get a Fun Fly stall the leading edge to perform some of the most outrageous snaps, then your doing something wrong!

Strokes???? If your talking about throw....I think i have enough at 50deg+. I have never had or seen a thick wing funfly snap. Also i never fly wide open. I have tried at 1/2( witch is where i fly ) low throttle. I have seen some people's snap in one direction and not the other. I have tried left, right, up, down it does the same in all directions.
I have even seen other peoples fun fly look like they snap. But when i fly it , it looks the same but i feel it drive though the snap.
Yes i fly a aft cg too. Dont know what to tell ya.
maybe a snap to me is a real tight snap like in normal wings. But the ones i see in the funflys is the real big barrel type.

I have to agree with coony. The only time i stall the wing on the OMP is in a hover. Even in a harrier you can feel the wing flying. Might be why im having a hard tome doing them. But i think i got them figured out.
