Default Knife vs. Other

Is a Morris the Knife a good plane for every day fun flying...you know rolls, loops, quick tight turns and stuff...or is it a strictly 3d plane? Morris is about 5 minutes from where I live and if people are happier with it than their Somethin Extras and the like, I'll go with that I suppose...I'm just lookin for the best bang for el bucko...

Default Go with the Knife

You can fly the Knife anyway you want. Just set it up that way. At least with the Knife you'll be able to do 3D, where the Something Extra is more a sport plane on steroids. The Knife will offer you more versitility (IMHO)

One thing I was intimidated with are those HUUUGE airleons, but as Kevin4 said, just set it up how you want (very small to insane surface throws), and the Knife will fly any way you want, with the added benifit of landing reeeeeeeal sloooooow!!!!!!Then when you feel comfortable flying 3-D your gonna have some fun! Morris hit the nail on the head with Morris the Knife. Man I wish I lived 5 minutes from Morris Hobbies.

I like it when I do my preflight check and whoever is standing near me sees those ailerons crank up to around 80 degrees. It freaks them out and isn't that what this sport is all about?

Well the Knife's nature is forgiving. If you dial it in mild it will be as gentle as a trainer and land great. My Knife will do knife edge, knife edge loops, hover, harrier, elevators, inverted flat spins, waterfalls, knife edge spins, knife edge snap roll, etc...
Just don't get it too fast. Keep your prop around a 3.75 or 4 pitch. Good thrust not much speed.

The only real vice of a profile is flying is moderate to high winds (15+ mph). Due to the large fuselage area, get ready to use that rudder (that's why you're buying a Knife anyways right?) as the plane will tend to weathervane quite a bit crosswind. You'll get used to it since the correction is pretty natural, just more pronounced... I've even flown mine entirely horizontal in the wind with no foward motion, it's also fun landing backwards into the wind!

I have flown mine in winds as high as 20 mph gusts. If the wind is steady it's fun. If it's gusty your plane will roll but it was still fun.

Not to hijack a thread or anything but I was really surprised how well the Pen Knife handled the wind. Didn't really phase it...landed easily. I've had it in 15-20 mph winds.

The guy at Morris said to mount the tank externally, up at the nose like I see on most profiles...any suggestions? Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Excellent...now how? Hehehe, I saw some guy with grommets and zip ties...but I don't want to compromise the structural integrity...someone just hold my hand and do it for me! (j/k)

I actually prefer having the tank buried in the wing. I ditched the 8oz unit that came with the plane and went with a Sullivan 6oz which fits great!!! Have no problems with fuel draw or tank pressure. Looks a lot cleaner IMHO.

I screwed eye hooks on the top and bottom of the tank (4) and held it on with rubber bands. I have also seen guys cut slits through the fuse and use zip ties. I'll do that on my next plane.

Mine is in the wing. I plan built mine so it is probably balanced alot better than the ARF. With the ARF you might need the extra nose weight. If youre building it from a kit I would put it in the wing.........John

I used epoxy. I honestly hate using CA, so I avoid using it on just about everything with the exception of hinges...

I used CA on my top cap wings and tail and its holding up fine. Even dorked it in a few times!

Isn't ca 10 times stronger than epoxy?

Default I'm a believer

I was skeptical about using CA to mount the wing but it is holding up fine with about 25 flights so far. I did use 30min epoxy on the stab. Pete
