what happened to the 70% extra.
it was on desplay at the TOC in vegas but had not been flown yet.
anyone know if the plane is still alive?
what does the owner do with it?
does it generate revenue?
he said he spent 70k to build it

2nd hand info
Last I heard from my Lhs a couple of weeks ago is that the owner has yet to fly it. He has been talking with friends at a site in Calif. about flying the maiden voyage out there. Definitely no spectators allowed. I think the FAA has a say-so on this one. Just too big to go out to a open field and fly.
Remember this is second hand info. Haven't talked to Bob myself.

The plane is a masterpiece. I hope it flys well but I have my doubts on the Robart hinges he used on the control surfaces. If he has a failure I would bet money that is the cause. I would have used aircraft hinges not Robarts. The plane is huge!

you know what when I was at TOC i saw the plane. I had my camera with me and took a bunch of photos. I don''t know why I took this photo but I hapen to have a close up of the hinges used. at TOC the owner of this plane mentioned that ama had contacted him and mentioned that they wanted no part of this project.
that stinks.. all that work and money tied up and no flight time. He had that thing in the dessert....... that would have been a good time..
at what point does AMA walk away.. isn't it around 50 lbs?
is that a trigger point for the FAA?
this is like a "" If you build it they will come" only they haven't come yet

Who cares if the AMA isnt interested in it. Fly it somewhere else. Most ama fields wouldnt be big enough anyway.
There is other options Im sure. If he could afford to build it he probably could buy his own field.
I believe ama has special wavers up to 100lbs or something

The builder of this one sent me a couple shots a year or two ago.. might be the same guy.
He's an former NASA guy, who builds well.
The thing looks really good in a larger image (too large for RCU)..
But..
More money than brains as far as I'm concerned.
Toy airplane radios are way too underdesigned for any fail-safe operation to risk something this large anywhere it could hurt people.

Even a normal plane can kill someone though, not just a mega one. What a shame that it won't have more than 1:1 thrust to weight ratio. You won't be able to do 3D with it.
With a plane that size, the amount of fail safes and gizmos on it would make it much less likely to have a mechanical failure than your average r/c model. If the pilot is really good then that would also rule out pilot error so what is AMA's problem?
On another tangent,
Just emagine the amount of help that kind of money would give if he sent it to the dying children in africa. Don't get me wrong, that plane is very cool but i think that it is a waste of money when it gets that expensive just on a toy when the money could be used to save lives. I would give the money to charity instead.
Yes really.

Good point luke.
We lost a great guy to a 40 size plane last year. Far more power packed into a little 40 than i ever imagined. This is only the difference between being hit by a 2 ton truck and a 20 ton truck. Who cares? If you get hit above the waist, you are probably done for.
The only reason i can see there would be any difference is the typical safety fences can hold off a 5 pound plane fine, but wouldn't slow a 50 pounder at all.

70% Staud
Hi guys,
Boy doI love staudachers. This one is just toooo kooool!I figure they haven't found apilot yet,but I'd do it absolutely free and I wouldn't let anything in my way!
By the way,I was wondering if this staudy is 70% scale does this mean Icould get in and fly it if I weighed 200# and lost 30% of my weight (meaning Iwas 70% scale)? Meaning let see,I'd weigh 140#.Wow Ihaven't seen that weight in 35 years. Now that would be a great accomplishment.
See ya

I spoke to the owner of the monster Staudacher Bob Sawyer yesterday inquiring about the status of flying the model. As suggested by another it was scheduled to be flown in Texas recently but it looked like it was to become a circus and Bob opted to cancel the test flight. A test site is being considered in the near future on a lake-bed in California. He muttered something about it being pita to haul around, go figure...
Bob must have purchased stock in Robarts for all those hinges utilized in the construction of this BIGGIE... If a handful of these little guys is good enough for a 40% 3D model then a barrel full of them should work fine on a70% model. Lets consider whats going on here, if there properly secured and or anchored to material thats up to the job shearing the pins or tearing apart the hinge body is the least of there problems.
