Top Secret, FFF Eyes Only
I picked up this engine in Japan last fall. It is a Saito 56F, the F stands for Fun Fly. It seems just as strong as my old one that I flew in my Sudokhoi. The advertising that I can find on it says that it has a modified carburetor and valve timing. Other than that the only difference that can be seem externally is the red anodized prop hub. The box though seems to be way cool and is probably worth more as a conversation piece! I mentioned it in a different post and someone said they had "FFF" cast into the backplate and it stands for "Fun Fly Fanatic". Enjoy.

The only thing that I can tell is that the mid range throttle response is real good. Kind of like a sewing machine (linear). Right now it has a APC 12x6 on it. Turns 10,200 with only about 20 flights on it. I will try the APC 13x6 this weekend but right now the 12x6 seems to be the best prop for the plane.

I need a plane for the 56. Going to Toledo next weekend, and I need to make up my mind. But now you've scared me off of the fun flys, cause mine don't have the FFF on it

Muffler?
Is that ugly thing the NEW Saito Muffler ? Argggggg Or did you take it off of a Y.S. lol.
I have to confess though when I did get my Y.S. .63 from a fellow on here at our wonderful site. RCUniverse. I thought for sure there was a mistake with that piece of all thread tubing lol.
The FFF Saito .56 is a much improved version of the regular Saito .56 Just wish they made them in the .91 version

I bought this in Japan and I doubt that Horizon Hobby will sell this here. Since they are made in Japan I believe this is one packaged for a Japanese market . If a white box has Horizon Hobby on it, not a sticker, then I would guess that they repackage it for us folks here. It came with a complete tool kit (combination wrench for the double locking prop nut and exhaust pipe, allen wrenches for every size on the engine, tappet wrench, screw driver and a feeler gage). Instructions are all in Japanese and you will not find the Saito booklet like you get in one from over here. The included glow plug caused many problems during initial tuning so I replaced it with an OS F plug and it has ran like a champ since. I'm used to both types of mufflers since my Seduction Freestyle sports a YS 63 and have owned Saitos in sizes .56, .72, .91, and 1.80. If you want to buy one I would recommend one of the overseas hobby shops like Singapore Hobby Shop as a possible source.
Good Luck,
Jon

How would you compare the regular Saito 56 to a ys 63, is it close in performance?
I guess the Saito 72 would be close if not better. Which do you like better the YS 63 or saito 72? Seems these two are real close to each other in performance.
Seems like the Japanese keep the good stuff for themselves

YS vs. 56?
The YS63 will always beat the 56 performane wise. The 56 may be a better choice though if the plane is real light. My Seduction Freestyle wants to climb out of a hover at 1/4 throttle. I've propped it w/APC 13x6. It gives me great speed and pulling power, its that the plane doesn't hover that well with that prop. Same exact engine in a Global freestyle (probably 1lb heavier) and it hovered great at around 1/2 throttle. I bought the Saito 56F to put in my Seduction Wildstyle as this is the engine the plane is designed around, and it should come out close to 4lbs if not less.
The Saito 72 was a good engine, but I like the YS much better. Having the CG stay constant throughout the flight is something to be experienced to really appreciate. The only negative about the YS is that it does take an electric starter to get it going. Every Saito I have ever owned was a joy to hand start once the carb is set correctly. Power wise I think the YS is better. I have never had these 2 engines in the same plane so I do not have a direct comparison.
When I go to Japan (4 or 5 times a year) I look for the R/C hobby shops. It gives me something to do and I have met some really cool people in the hobby (Giichi Naruke and Yoichiro Ono). I first learned to fly there in the mid 80's and have always liked the quality of the stuff sold. Back then it was a lot cheaper. Now I just look for the bargains or the oddball stuff like this engine. I also have a stash of Japanese Team JR stickers that are not sold here. Gotta stay away from the hobby shops!
Regards,
Jon

Chuck,
His hobby shop is in a little corner of a cyber cafe that he runs. Not much of a store put he does have a lot of his own design fun fly stuff that he sells. He has his planes displayed ("original' Ono Special and Demonstrator in the front room, and all his profiles he has designed in the side room. I've posted pics in other threads, but if you want to see them let me know.
BTW, you will like that plane! Build the Ono Special first. I would have gotten that one but the person behind the counter told me "NO SPECIAL" and I took it as he would not give a discount on the kit. Stupid me. Favorite manuver=high speed knife edge loop....one right after the other. 3Ds well too.
Have fun,
Jon

Yeah..
I figured on building the Ono first, then I'll know how to Ono-ize the regular one. I sent you a PM with my e-mail if you want to send me some pics..you can't attach thru the system here.

Wood,
The plans for the plane show the 56F as the engine in place. Having seen this plane flown as an electric, and the parts are included in the kit to convert it to electric, a regular 56 or even OS 52 four stroke would be plenty for this plane. However, these engine choices would be at the upper limit for the airframe in case someone is thinking about putting a larger engine in it because it is not needed.
