Default Finished...

Here it is finished...

I really like the way it flew... I think I might need some beefier servo's... Both aileron servos stripped on me... I'm gonna try some HS 55's...

Yup... it's the poor man's version.. or maybe the impatient man's version....

Didn't want to wait for the kit.... Gator call me one night.. says, "Hey Paully... made a hit on Home Depot, why don't you come over and check it out"....

So I show up and he's got a load of 5/8" styrofoam and a bundle of blue cor.... I wasn't gonna do the electric thing right away.. but he just gives me half of his materials and lends me the plane for reference....

I ended up buying some Zepron and carbon fiber rods from a place called Air Dynamics, www.airdyn.com. Great place!! Lots interesting stuff... Then I just started drawing it up and working on a design... I used the blue cor for the ribs with 1/8" x 3/8" spars... and 1/8" x 1/4 leading edge. Nelson's lite film for covering I got from Dave Thacker at www.RadicalRC.com. Servo's were from fellow ProBro, Troy Grahm.. HS-50's

I changed my wing tips from Gators.... Not sure if I like 'em yet... I only got about 2 flights out of it before I stripped the aileron servos.

Hovered it on the first flight... Awesome little bird.. Holds up the wind pretty good... Awesome Glides...

The only thing that really hurt my wallet was that motor... That little bugger goes for $139!!! and the speed control is another $89!! OUCH!!

It would be really cool if I could find an alternate that wouldn't be so expensive... But then again.. It's hard to beat the performance of the Hacker!

I got one of those SU31 3D electrics Im going to put together really soon! I love electrics and love funfly planes so this plane will be perfect.
I'll be building mine as soon as I get the equipment for it.
Im going to use a Hacker B20-12L with 4:1 gearbox, 10x1100Hecell, 11x4.7 prop.
HS 50 servos are meant for slowfly planes that dont fly fast or dont handle much load. HS 55's are what they recommend for it and I have a ton of these on my electrics and like them very much.
What did you use to cover yours?

Remember that Hitec has the thing with servos or anything if you strip out servos, send them back to them and they'll fix them for free.

Ok ok...So how much was the total??
Those little electrics are starting to go to a I WANT ONE!!!status .
Do you think a speed 480 could move this little beauty? Maybe with a gearbox? I know hacker it's just the best for electric motors but expensive like you said..But then again you get what you pay for...

A 480 would power it ok, not direct drive, you would need a gearbox to fly it ok. But it wont be 3D with a 480, just an ok sport plane.
If you want cheap 3D electric plane look at the Radical RC edge 540 on www.radicalrc.com I love mine and have a brushless seutp coming in the mail for it.

Or the bigger E3D that flies well and 3D on brushed or brushless motors. www.gwmp.net

Man... I don't even know how to size electrics.... I just bald face copied Gators... inch for inch... component for component... Once I get a little experience I'll try other things..

There are allot of other brushless motors out there... I wonder if any of them compair??

It's amazing to see what this little motor can put out... Little tiny thing is swinging a 11 x 4.7 e prop.... incredible...

Mega brushless motors are cheaper and work great. I have a few of them also. A Mega 16/15/3 with a 3:1 gearbox would put out the same thrust as the 15L. The newer razor motors are almost the same as hackers sound good. I like megas and hackers the best. But the 16/15/3 geared would be just about the same as the B2015L and the 16/15/2 geared woudl be the same as the b20 12L
What hacker did you use for yours?
I get all my brushless stuff from www.espritmodel.com they have lots of good stuff for the cheapest prices.

Paul, strap an APC 12x6 E prop on there and WATCH OUT!!! You will be hovering that 20 oz. plane at less than half throttle. This is the "Golden Ticket" setup all of us use over at the EZone ( http://ezonemag.com ) Just don't fly at full throttle for very extended times.

I'm building your Taco II for the same setup you are using now with 9 HECELLS, B20 15L 4:1 and a 12x6 E prop. I have it totally framed up with no lightening at all (used heavy balsa) and it is 10 oz. bare bones. My target AUW is 25 oz. and will fly GREAT with the "Golden Ticket" setup

Here's a pic of my progress (10 oz. w/o motor) It took about 6 hours to scratch build.

Here it is compaired to a plane called the Mini Flash by Mountain Models. The Mini Flash is a 3D type acrobat designed for the GWS 300 motor/GB, but most people put the "Golden Ticket" setup in it (i.e. Hacker B20)

The Mini Flash with the Hacker and 9HECELLS weighs 20 oz. and hovers at less than half throttle, so my 25 oz. Taco II should work great.

Acer,
Sounds like you've got a great little plane!
What rpm are you running with that setup on 9 cells?
How and where are you mount the battery pack?

Acer,
I bet that would be a great set up for Mark Shopes .15 size Menace Plus.
How much does the 9 cell pack weigh?

I'll have to see where I can put the battery after I cover the wing and install the servos. I'll have to check the C.G., but I think I might be able to put the battery in the wing cross mounted. If not, I'll make a small ply plate and attach it to the bottom of the fuse, holding the battery on with velcro ties.

The 9 1100 mah HECELL pack weighs 6.8 oz. If I were to buy more packs I'd buy a 9-cell pack of KAN 950's. They can pull 20A continuous, while the HECELLS are really only good for around 16A.

How big is that .15 size plane you're talking about? Do you have a link or any pics?
