Default 46 FX and prop size ???

I flew my OMP edge the other day with an 11-4 APC prop. Had MORE than enough power to rocket the plane vertical but hovering was tough because I couldn't find that sweet spot where it would stay. I have an APC 12.25-3.75 prop but I think that would bog it down. I hear people using the 11.5-4 with good results but would the extra 1/4" of blade really give that much difference? And why isn't there a compromise between the two like an 11.75 - 3.75? Or is there?

Default 46 FX and prop size ???

Not that i know of but, man that would be awsome!!!
I like,
11x5
11.5x4
12x4

I was running zinger props to get the motor to spool up fast enough but tried a apc on sunday and man, got 1k more rpm!
The motor has to have a razor tune on it to get it to transtion with out bogging but there is tons of power.

Click on the www on the bottom to see what mine will do with a zinger 11.5x4 prop(cut down 12x4).

I'm running the 12.25x3.75 and one with a tower muffler. I've used the macs mufflers and moose cans as well. That is the best prop I've found for it. I've tried all the above. I get great throttle response and awesome vertical. I've never run one with the stock muffler, so it may in fact bog down, but for only $14 for the tower muffler, it is an awesome combo.

The 12.25x3.75 is definitely not a good prop for this engine. It does not spool up and down fast enough. If you are using one of these go and try a 11.5x4 APC. I fly my Sudokhoi with a 46fx and tower muffler, and this is the prop it likes the best and spools up fine. Not even the OS 50Sx likes the 12.25x3.75 prop. That engine likes the 12x4 ! The only engine that I have found that likes the 12.25x3.75 is the Irvine 53 with a UT muffler on a light plane (and only to prevent it from jumping on the tuned muffler to soon)
I know it is a matter of preference and prop plane combo, but the spool up remains the same. Probably the best way is to try different props yourself, and see what you like best.
I still don't understand why that 12.25x3.75 is such a popular prop for the 40 size engines. Just because they call it a 3D / Fun Fly prop ? Oh well, this has been discussed so many times.
Just my $0.02

Default Prop

I agree with Ulf. I love the 11.5X4 apc on my OMP Edge with OS 46fx.
But as Ulf says, try them all and see what you like.

Default 46 FX and prop size ???

Maybe I'm just lucky but I have the best spool up and down with this prop. On my PQHOR it want to harrier and hover below half throttle, when I nail it full, it's full and makes for instant transition and easy tail touches. I did lean out the low end a little to get it there though. This is the prop I'm most happy with.

I use the 12.25 x 3.75 on a GMS 47 with macs muffler. Solid transition, reasonably good spool up, and most importantly, it likes it. It is very happy.

Default 12x4

I used to use 11.5x4's on my .46's until yesterday.

Hooked up digital fish scale to plane and found the following for a TT .46, Tower Muffler, 10% fuel:

11.5x4 pulled high 6 lbs
12.25x3.75 pulled low-mid 7 lbs
12x4 pulled 8 lbs even (12,900)

12x4 spools same as 11.5x4 and it's my new prop for .46's

All props were APC

Ordered a 13x4 to try out.

Quantifiable results! I knew the 12.25 was better than the 11.5, but that 12x4, wow! Thanks for the tip Geoharry.

Heres another vote for the 11 1/2 x 4 APC

I've tried em all, on several planes, and this is definately my preferance on the 46fx.

Some people just don't like to hear this engine turn up the rpms. I put a 12 1/4" x 3 3/4 on a couple times, and it sounded like my engine was screaming for mercy.

Let em turn.

So lets see about a happy medium between the two.

Like an 11.75 - 3.75

there is a big jump between 11.5 and 12.25

Get a 12x4 and shave it down to 11.75.

Well today I tried the 12.25-3.75 prop. I felt that I had better altitude control in a hover and it seemed to hold it better than an 11-4.

However you (All of) are right in that when you need to pour on the coal it takes a while to spool up and yank your plane outa trouble.

Second I had a hard time getting the thing to slow down as well. I think I might try to shave a half an inch off each side and see what that does.
