Default OMP edge with saito 72 ?? Setup

Hi guys
Just ordered this plane and I am planning on maybe sticking a saito 72 in it. ANyone flying this combo, if so how does it balance and fly and should I jump up to the 82. I am thinking the 72 is all I am going to need. Also what fuel and prop are you guys running with this combo

ALso I have done a million searches and would still like to know maybe if some of you edge flyers could post your engine and servo choice for this plane.

I need some servos and I am kinda of confused in which route I should go . I dont want to spend a fortune but also would like to have some that last and are quick enough for when I advance in 3d. WHen choosing should I go for standard or digital
So far some suggest the hitec 635 I actually have 4 Jr nes 537"s laying around .BUt notice they are only
Torque:40 oz/in @ 4.8V, 49 oz/in @ 6V
Speed:.25 sec/60° @ 4.8V, .19 sec/60° @ 6V

They actually compare to others in the 6 volt range, but am wondering if the torque will be enough. The 635 have a little bit hight speed (.15 ) and torque (83 ) compared to my 537's. WOUld the speed be noticable.

Also for the battery pack should i go 4.8 or 6 volt , and what mah

ANy other tips on this setup is greatly appreciated.

a club mate has this model fitted with an OS 81 FS and i must say its a beauty for 3D stuff. as for balance [c.o.g. ] i would set it up just slightly tail heavy for 3D flying . a good easy way to go from correct c.o.g to slightly tail c.o.g. is use a 6 volt pack firstly then go down to a 4.8 v pack for 3D , so set up the model right on the border line of c.o.g with the 5 cell pack first. as for servos any type with atleast 45 oz ins torque on 4.8 volts. if you can buy some [ INO -LAB servos grab them as they have heaps of torque / speed plus there coreless digitals and also cheaper than most Hitecs etc.

I presume you are talking about the 47in Edge.

You must have a 70 oz in or better servo on the rudder, IMHO digitals are now so cheap if you are buying servos buying analog is a waste of money. Most pilots will notice a difference in how crisp the control response is with decent digitals.

I use Futaba and the servo no I am using for 3D is S3152. Running on either 4.8 or 6v would be OK for you.

You can find 3152s under $30 if you look around.

I have both the V2 ARF and the current V3 ARF flying, and this is one great 3D plane! I tried a Saito .82 on my V3 and in my opinion, it was just to much motor. The throttle was too sensitive and even scaling back the throttle with the radio just didn't feel right. I think the Saito .72 seems much better. Use the APC 14X4W prop and you will be having fun. On the V3 ARF, I recommend gluing the wings on to the fuse permanently. If you don't there is some slight flexing. If you are just starting, use the 4.8V battery and some decent lower cost digital servos. Low slop output shafts are very important to me especially on the rudder. Get your balance just right and this plane will comfortably really help you advance your flying skills.

yep, besides the mojo, this is a great plane to learn on.

.72 is a great engine.

i use 20/20, or 30% power master, or cool power. i like to use at least 20/20, the higher nitro really improves the idle and the power, also these mixes usually are all synthetic so they wont gum up the valve train like fuel with caster will.

props i like,13x6apc,mas s2, or 14x4 xoar, the master airscrew 'k' or 's2' props are great, they can take a lot of abuse.

for servos, on the 40 size slabs i like the hitec 475's, or the jr 821's,always an hitec 85mg for the throttle.

and i use 6v nimh, or 1100 a123's.

and for balance, i'd stick the engine as far back on the rails as possible, then adjust the battery to your liking. i usually check it by flying at half throttle and flip to inverted, if it climbs its too tail heavy, if it drops the nose its nose heavy.
i like em' to be neutral, or to just add a little down ele to keep it level when inverted.

as for glueing the wings on permenant, its a great idea if your not going to dork it a lot, but if you are really just starting to figure out 3d i'd leave them unglued. its a lot easier to remove one panel and do a repair job then it is when your wrestleing around with the whole plane.

get it going, fly the snot outa it, and in the mean time build a mojo 40, or even better get the mojo 60.

thanks guys for all the help

Quick ?? I just picked the saito 72 from lhs, and was wondering. THey had it for 225 and noticed everywhere else is 259 . On the top of the manual for engine it says version 2002. Im guessing its a older version obviously ,why marked down . I asked salesman and he said he didnt think there were any changes.

I was reading around the net and came across this

On older engines there is a screw with a spring as you can see on the following picture of the carb on a Saito-56 engine.

The function of this screw is two-fold. First it holds the throttle barrel in place, second it sets a mechanical stop
for the movement of the throttle barrel . The screw is adjustable so that the position of the mechanical stop can be adjusted;
why this might be a desirable feature is a real mystery because it is usual for the servo to control the throttle travel.
More recent engines no longer use a long screw with a spring as shown for example in the two pictures below of the
carbs on Saito-82a and Saito-220 engines.

you can read more here at bottom of page,, http://saito-engines.info/throttle_setup.html

DO the new .72 haved this spring and screw if not I am thinking i need to exchange it for a new version.. It seems to me its just one more thing to go wrong on a engine...I noticed on the 82 it doesnt have the throttle stop screw and spring. was just wondering if the new 72 dont have it either. Thanks again for the help \
Bob

Here's a picture of my Saito .72. I bought it from horizonhobby.com early 2008. I'm pretty sure that they sent me the latest version of that engine. It does indeed have a screw with a spring on the carb. I never touched it.
