Default Are Profiles Out

I fly a Morris Fun Design w/Powerhouse RE 45 (Rossi), a Morris Top Cap w/OS 45 SF
and a Fun 51 w/ST 40. I like flying each of them. However I think I now fly the only
profiles in our club (non-electric). We have a club of about 150 members and
about 40% fly regularly. Morris planes were popular in our club about 6 or 7 years
age now I'm the only member who flys one. The Fun 51 was also popular with
OS LA 40 engine and now they are gone, except for mine. There were some
Thunder Tiger Profile ARFs and they are gone. Are they on there way out????

I don't think they are, they are just getting way to expensive... you can buy a full sized plane for the cost of some of the profiles today! I got mine from ebay for 99.00 and its great!

I think alot of guys fly arfs. For whatever reason. I think if they are gonna spend enough to buy an arf they will buy something that appeals to them. I love profiles. I have two. I plan on more. I build them from plans. I don't think they are the best looking planes on the flight line. I build and fly them for performance. I think most guys who fly profiles are interested in performance first. Also most of the guys at the club (my club ) like scale and warbirds. I don't like to just fly in circles.

Good luck.

I'm with you, I don't like to fly in circles either. while it can be appealing at times to just fly around, and the planes look nice, I like a little excitement sometimes.

I want to build a giant scale profile from some 85" wings and stab set I have, I just got to find the wood for it now. I have a 65cc engine on the shelf that I was planing on putting in it.

You guys are missing the point of profiles. They fly better. At least the real ones do. The Morris stuff is WAY outdated and eclipsed by the MoJo's and OMP profiles.

This is what profile flying is all about. It is definitely NOT about saving money.

I guess, If you say so. Less wood, simpler plans, easy builds.... you would think less money right? just because they fly in a different class doesn't mean more money, are better for that matter. Mojo kits are reasonable price wise and I hear they fly great, but I've said it before, its not rocket science. An OMP arf pro yak is like 250.00 bucks are more! Some people would say its not about money if the plane flys great, LOL! Thats funny...

You pay for the name and popularity! one day mojos/OMPs will be outdated and it will be on to the next type! Its like boy bands...

Ditto the above concerning cost. I built 2 profiles last year and totally agree that products from OMP rock......however, in doing a little comparison shopping you will find the latest OMP 47" Yak profile listing for $189 plus shipping. I ordered my lastest plane, a Great Planes Reactor, off the web for $179 and free shipping. YES, the Reactor is a different model and will fly differently...thats the fun of the hobby AND THE PRICE WAS RIGHT

So I would say, to sum up the topic starter's question, that the profiles he has are out.

Get a MoJo, build it, and find out for yourself. I will always have a good flying profile or 4 in my hanger.[8D]

Sweet Walt! Those big Yaks we did sure were a lot of fun. My buddy John McNees did that famous oil drop scheme for the ARFs.

We flew in circles years ago with profiles that were control line models!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear this sometimes from some of the retired guys at my club. On Sunday I heard from one "that I had a couple of nice control line models there".
I guess they are trying to insinuate something negative about my choice of a model. I guess in a friendly way. However, they flew great. Are cheap to make. They are light for engine choices. With all the controls and fuel tank on the outside they are easy to set up. And I am having a ball flying them. And unlike some of my retired brothers, I am not flying around in a circle with a slow moving scale plane.
I think it is really a personal choice. You know Chevy Vs a Ford. Redheads Vs Blondes. If you like it fly it and who cares what the other guy thinks anyway.
I have two flying and another on the table being built from plans. And I am looking forward to flying it.

Good luck.
Frank

I started this topic and have come to this conclusion. My Morris planes are old, however they
have never been damaged or bonked in any way so I hang on to them. I never update.
Obviously Mojo and OMP are the way to go. I now have both up "for sale". No hitters after
2 weeks. I am retired and most of my fellow "weekday" flyers don't update either. You
see a lot of worn out WWII scales, bi-planes (I have 3), big sticks, Contenders, 4 star 40's
& 60's, etc, etc, Great input you guys.

Profiles are in

I agree, they are still at the top of their popularity and not waning. I good 60-90 size profile will 3D like a 5K plane. That's what I like about them.

The other site is loaded with hardcore 3D flyers that learned by doing it themselves and burning lots of fuel.

Ramcharger, you need to visit the other site that's dedicated to hardcore 3D flying with profile planes. You will find out that 3D profiles are growing in popularity, and definitely not fading away.
