Default lucky break (pull cable)

while flying last sat i noticed some elevator slop (wouldnt center perfectly) when i landed i noticed that there was some slack in my pull pull cables. no big deal...
getting ready to go meet Gator and his dad tomorrow to fly with them,so thought better adjust elevator cable. tightened up cable and moved elevator a few times and the cable snapped. gave way where it passes tru the adjuster on the elevator.
i have about 100 flights on my knife, have adjusted cables one other time, fly with them pretty tight. has anyone else had this problem? think i am flying with cables too tight? cables were the ones that came with the kit.
oh yeah, what are the odds of this happening on the bench?!
