Default Morris knife motor mount question

Attached is a pic of my Knife and the motor mounted forward as far as possible to get the CG right on the c/l. What kind of a problem is this forward positon going to cause relative to performance in 3D? I notice you other fellas have your engine located much further aft. Mine is apparently tail heavy and I am running a 6 volt pack and mini Hitec receiver with the fuel tank opposite the motor and not in the wing. Please give me your opinion. My plane with all the equiptment weighs 4 lb. 10 ozs. with a digital fish scale.

Is this kit built? Where do you have it balanced?

Yes, I got the kit from Morris hobbies and balanced it on the spar which is per the plan with the kit.

Default Morris knife motor mount question

If you are an experienced pilot, you can set the CG back at least 1/2" to start with. If not leave it there.
The way the engine is mounted now is no problem. What I would do is balance at 5" putting the battery as much forward as I can and then mount engine. I have seen guys putting the battery between the tank and fuse. I would also get rid of that heavy Dubro spinner nut, and substitute for an aluminum one or little plastic spinner. Once balanced at 5" and wanting to move further back later, you can always then move the battery pack back.
Just my $0.02

Default Morris knife motor mount question

Thanks for answering my question. I am balanced at 4 1/2 inches and have a six volt pack as far forward as possible. my plan was to test fly it and then put on the light weight aluminum spinner, thus moving the CG aft as you suggested. I have my ailerons set at 1 1/4 inches and elevator at 1 1/8 inch on low rates with 50 percent expo. The rudder is set at 1 inch low and 1 3/4 on high rates with expo of 50 percent. I welcome youre thoughts. I fly GB Extra 300 and Variant with YS-91 but not a hot quick fun flyer at my age. I have had a Polar Bear and Sig Fazer in the past.

You should be okay with those throws..... If you want to move the engine back later, you can always just drill another set of holes farther aft... I'm sure you're gonna have some fun with this bird!! Let us know how it goes.
