Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
1 Attachment(s)
YeeeeeeHaaaaawwwwww!!!!!!!!
Well, after a marathon 2day building, covering and finishing binge, I finally completed this doggone thing...... I don't know what it weighs, but the guys at the field today told me that it feels pretty doggone light.... I will wait and see. All servos are standard size Futabas except for the HS 81 on throttle. Batt pack is a 5 cell 700mah Nimh pack. I put an 8 ounce tank on it to feed the TT .46 Pro (thanks Gator, it runs grrrreat). I made some special mounts for the engine that allow the right thrust to be adjusted pretty easily. It will also allow me to change motors should I ever need to. (don't think I will need to). After finishing her out, I took her to the field and let a couple of buddies check out all the connections, etc, to make sure that I did not miss anything. The CG was just right the first time, no weight added, and did not have to move anything. I taxied her around for a minute, and pointed it into the wind. 3/4 throttle and it was instantly in the air. It only took a click or two of aileron and elevator. After feeling out how it responded, I did some flat spins and even pulled up into a hover for a second or two... (all my skills will manage). I tried knife edge, which it does pretty well, and some aileron rolls (very axial). I finished off this first flight with a three point. It still needs some dialing in on elevator movement, but I am pretty happy with this one..:D I hope ya'll like it. |

Almost forgot the hovering shot.....
In a hover, it hangs there pretty well. On the second and third flights, I got it to hang in the hover pretty well. It stays on its own for a pretty good while, and I think I will be able to 'control' it back into the hover when it gets out of shape, but I am still overcontrolling it and making things worse. One of these days, I will get better..... |
RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
That is one truly sweet airplane. GREAT job!

Nice Bird. |
RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
WOW, Jeremy,,,,,that looks great, look forward to seeing it fly inperson....glad to hear the TT46 is enough
now if we can figure how to get you off mode1, so we can fly your birds:D GATOR |
RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
That looks awesome Jeremy..... I'm with Gator... We need to get you off Mode 1 so we can fly your birds!! Damn.... I always wanted to torque a bipe.....
|
RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
Hey guys, no problem. I have a synthesized transmitter. Just find out what channel Jeremy is on and then send him out for Cokes. A little Beep-Beep-Beep and we'll have that bipe trimming the trees in about five minutes. . . . .
Jeremy, great looking plane!! Can't wait to see it flying in person. When are you going to the field?? |
RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
Jeremy,
Bravo and Congrats! I waited around yesterday for as long as I could (company coming over). Sorry I missed it. That Pitts is awesome. Glad to hear that things went well with the maiden. Now that you don't have so much on your mind.....about that Sledge:) :) :) Regards, John |
RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
I'd like to get a better look at how that engine is mounted:-).

RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
Depending on what radio he uses....
You could buddy box a mode 2 with his mode 1. A friend does this all the time with his 8U. You get all his settings as well. Really kind of slick.... Pugs |
RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
Jeremy..you ought to post a couple of the "bones" pics so guys can see what she looks like "nekkid". I've seen it in the bones, and it's a work of art.

RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....

Thanks a bunch for the compliments ya'll!
I did all the design work for it in CAD, so I do have CAD plans. They are almost 'done', just need a little more detailing on one of the sheets (2 sheet plans) for someone else to be able to build from them. (I draw plans for myself, build the plane and then go back and label/detail/make changes to them if I need to....). The other benefit of doing the work in CAD was that I was able to have a 'short kit' CNC cut for it, which I used to build this prototype. Finally, I took pictures of almost every construction step in high res digital so that I could do instructions if needed (and I do mean every step, I took over 100 pictures...). I would like to make the short kits and plans/instructions available, but I want to make sure it is 'right on' before I do so. I don't want something out in the world with my name on it that is not right. I mounted the engine using metal 'sub' mounts. The engine bolts to the mounts, then the mounts are bolted to the maple engine rails. Makes the mount extremely strong, and engine changes can be done in a snap. I could take this on from a TT .46 Pro to a .63 4stroker in a pretty short time because of the rail/submount system. Other advantage is that it makes setting the right thrust easy to experiment with and set. Here's some pics of the mounts and the bones..... |

RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
Got an opportunity to go out and fly this thing again. Hovered lower and longer this time...never took anything over 1/3 throttle to hold altitude. Bigger planes do hover better (I normally fly .25 size or smaller stuff)
Anyway, I really like the knife edge flight on the thing, and high alpha rolling is fun with it too. Have not yet figured out how to get an inverted flat spin just right yet, but I will eventually..... I also got an opportunity to get the plane on a scale finally. It weighs in at 4 pounds 2 ounces. I guess that is pretty OK for a .46 size plane, but I don't really have anything to compare it to. Keith/Gator, we will have to get it out weekend after next. I am takin' the wife to the mountains this weekend (first vacation to somewhere besides my parent's in a couple of years:eek:). Jack E. offered up that he had an unused 6xas on mode 2 that I could borrow and set up for the plane. We will see what we can do with that : ) |
RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
4 lbs 2 oz is damn good for a 40 sized profile with one wing! I bet that thing is sweet, glad to hear it knife edges well, that was the main gripe about the Pitts S1/S2, they coupled badly. Looks like the Model 12 took care of that.
|
RE: Profile Pitts Model 12 Complete and Hovering.....
Congartulations Jeremy. That looks just awesome and sounds great ! The weight is also perfect I would say. Dang its only 4lbs 2 oz with 2 wings.
You know I want a kit once it becomes available, so write my name down. |
