How do you hover an airplane, i mean strait up hover? Any tricks to it?

At first, it seems impossible, but them you wonder why you couldn't do it 2 years ago, it takes the right type of plane, setup properly, and practice.....

I tie a string to the prop and have a friend hold it while I hold the transmitter and get a few pictures![8D]

It takes liek a month man just practice every day with some random profile plane and your good. :-)

If the plane falls to the right correct with left and vise-versa and pull on the elevator stick to keep the plane in the upright position

Hey man 15 year olds don't always end up thinking right in the brain ;) It is weird though because after you can do it...your liek damn how was i not able to do that. I have a serious hovering problem because people(old farrts in my club) want me to test fly liek avistars and I start hovering those and if they can then I say they are gresat trainers(who the hell knows what a good trianer flies lie, thye are all the same) Well, gotta go

back to a hover "KIDS":D, I learned to pull vertical bout 1/4 or so throttle as it begins to stall or drop steadily add power till you can hold it keeping the nose up. C/G is an important roll so make sure your right on it.

Hovering is simply a matter of pulling a plane verticle, and using power to keep it from climbing or falling, and using elevator, and rudder to keep the tail underneath the airplane. No big secrets to it. Having larger controls with lots of throw helps, as does an aft cg (not tailheavy) Just at the rearward part of the range. Of course you will need better than 1 to 1 power to weight ratio as well. Now go out, and practice and have fun.

gotta use the left hand. bank and yank doesn't work well in hover! and practice. it helps to have a light plane with big surfaces at first, to give you time to think. and practice. use throttle and elevator to keep the nose where you want it. and practice. orientating on a non-moving plane takes some time to learn. reminds me of when I learned to fly heli's. and practice a LOT.:D

Here is the sucky thing about "trying" to hover a plane. First you need to have the plane a couple of mistakes high. Second you are probably using a 40 size to learn with. Third I can not for the life of me figure out when the plane is falling out before its to late and then I end up "trying" to keep my plane from digging a hole in the ground. It sucks that you need to have your plane that high to learn because you just can't see what it's doing well. I guess I will keep trying.

Trying is a word I seam to use a lot.

I AM not at ease with using the rudder. For now i do not wish to use the rudder for hovering.

This may sound strange but the answer to your question may be answered by an explanation given to me by an accomplished 3D pilot. He explained that air is a fluid in motion and the more air flow the easier it becomes to control a model aircraft in flight. Think as air flow as wave motion. The bigger the wave the easier it becomes for a surfer to perform certain manuvers.
He went on to explain that you need constant wind felocity of at least 10mph to learn how to do this manuver. With the help of constant airflow it will be easier to maintain elevation and heading while in the learning mode.
It made a believer out of me when I whitness his words but into motion. I understand this may sound to simple but it is certainly a starting point.

Anyway, I've got a no rudder guy here in my club, and he brings planes to meetings, and makes a point of showing me that there is a rudder on it, but it's glued to the stab.

OK, to hover with no rudder, go with what Gordo first said. Fishing line and cheap camera tricks are the only thing that will get you where you want to be.

I guess you could program your transmitter to mix the rudder to follow the ailerons at 100%, but I'm not sure how much you would like that either, as you would still have to practice.

So, let's say that you will need 3 high gain gyros, and an FMA Co-Pilot. Install the gyros on all surfaces, and the FMA Co-Pilot as per the heli instructions. Just mount it at the mid point of the tail moment and program it to fly the rudder and elevator for you. The gyros will help it stabilize it too. So, all you have to do is learn to tune a needle valve, and work the throttle to hold a steady altitude. Wait a minute, that takes practice too.

Let's see, either the fishing line thing, or just take pictures of other folks doing it and tell us it's you... :D

I use 16 gyros, and three copilots to hover this plane. I just hold the trainer switch down, and it does it all by itself. Getting all of it programed was a biotch though! :D

Notice the elevator, and Rudder deflected? All done with smoke and mirrors!;)

esqueeze me? I am for only asking for how to hover a fuse airplane strait up and down. I do not wish to spend $ on gyro. I will be able to hover a plane without rudder until i am accostomed to the rudder if i can get some good information here. I can follow instructions well.
