wire bending

I have a K & S wire bender. I can bend coils also with this. If you are not going to bend coils, like in a nose gear, you can use a vice.

Kevins_RC 12-13-2002 04:48 PM

Agree w/ Joe

I agree with Joe, bending the landing gear for a PBXL is not rocket science. A vise will do the job just fine. I personally use a bender because I have one, though have done them in the past with just a vise.

PBXL

Mine is almost ready. Just need to attach engine and add battery and receiver. Hope to fly it this Sunday, weather permiting. I will post picture on Monday.

That's great Greg! Make sure that you stay away from any speed unless your going straight up. One customer call me and said that on test flight, they gave it full throttle for take-off. Remember that the PBXL is not a sport plane. Take-off from the ground should be at about 1/4 throttle. The more speed = more sensitive controls. Be sure to put a little right and down thrust by installing washeres in behind the engine mount.
Good Luck Greg and let us know how you make out!

Thanks for infor about speed and down/right thrust. I will be careful. Here is a picture of my PBXL almost ready to go. Just need final check of CG and install battery. I will use the direct plug of battery into receiver like combat planes.

I'll post results of first flights.

Where are you going to do the "battery plug in"? Seems like a switch would be easier....

Paul:

I will simply let the battery connector plug and another servo extender wire from the receiver hang out one of one of the hatches and plug them into each other for flying. We do it on combat planes which saves fooling around with switches--very simple and effective. Besides, my combat planes usually don't last that long anyway and it makes transferring equipment from one bird to another easier.

Greg, your PBXL looks great! I'd like to 'steal' your pic off of RCU for my website, if you don't mind? Also, you you give me your specs on it? Weight, engine, servos, size batt., you know the usuals?
Thanks!

Greg,

Good looking plane. Let us know how it flys.

Greg?

Did you ever get some information regarding MPI after we met?

Kevin,

I did check and I'm not sure if it is going to work. What servo was it that you liked? Maybe I tried on the wrong day. :D

I should start covering this weekend, the projects from my wife have been out of control. I want to have it ready, and hopefully test flown for our New Years Day fly off. At 10:00am everyone is lined up and sees who is the first in the air. I will be taking pictures as I won in 2002. Thought the PBXL would make a little splash.

Kevin:

I have been watching the MPI site. I see where they have the digital/fast servos. When I get to the Aeron I hope to be able to use digitals, at least on elev and rudder.

Plan is to maiden flight the PBXL today, but the forecast is for winds 15-25 mph so it might not happen.

As you requested, here are the vital statistics for my PBXL:
-2.75 lbs (weighed on a non-digital scale)
-Hitech 425BB on elevons/rudder, FMA mini on throttle
-Thunder Tiger Pro-25 with MA 9X4 (combat prop)-heavy hub required for CG
-Hitech 555 receiver, 270ma battery (I have 6.0v battery that I plan to use in the Aeron if the small one doesn't work out)

I would like to try a prop more in the FF size range, but for now this is all I have. On the shelf is an OS .32F that I have had difficulty getting to run--high speed is fine, but no idle or transition. If TT is too weak, I will attempt to get OS running better.

I will try to get some photos of maiden flight and post report.

Here is another photo of completed model.

General

Tipstall - The MPIs that I have been using are the 870s & 890s. I've lost 2 of the 870s on the Rudder of the Ecstasy. I just died, and the other would not hold the rudder. I may have to go back to the HiTecs. I don't know if I want to go to the digitals yet, too many factory call backs. I see that HiTec has a notice on their website now about their HiTec digital servos needing to be sent back to the factory for re-programming now too.

FlyingGreg - I appreciate the specs on your PBXL. I will update my website with your info. I posted your pictures last night on my website, though put you in Dayton, OH - SORRY! I'll fix it tonight.

REMEMBER - Guys, the PBXL is NOT a sport flier. I've heard from at least one customer that he was having trouble with his PBXL over half throttle / when he goes to take-off at full throttle, it does a barrel roll on lift off. Guys - it is going to get extremely sensitive with speed - it doesn't like it. You should hand launch it, or take-off with a burst of throttle. 1/4 throttle or less is normally enough to get it off the ground. Fly the PBXL in a high alpha angle.

Hi
What is the best prop For 25 sized engine ?
Is 9x6 prop ok ?
Is 25 engine good enough for hovering ?

pardon me for misspelling

Thanks

I like the 9 x 4 for a 25.... Works great for hovering my PBF...

Kevins_RC 12-20-2002 03:59 PM

25 good for hovering

Heck Yeah! :D
Check -out the pics of Jeff Williams hovering his. Jeff is running a GMS 25 on his.
As far as the prop - I'd go with something with less pitch, more like a 3 or 4 pitch. Remember that the PBXL is not made for speed.

Hi
one 24"x24" coroplast is about 9.5 oz , if it is heavier than empty body of PBXL?

Kevins_RC 12-20-2002 05:20 PM

HUGH???

What are you trying to ask? I can guess, I think, but rather you re-word your question so I can be sure to answer it appropriately.
