Magic owners thread
I have a question for you guys who have been playing with the magic for a while. I am loking to buy one and am caught up between putting a TT 42gp or the TT 36pro. What do you think? They weigh about the same with the 42 being $50 and the 36 being $75. Is there a large difference in performance? With the 42 I could get the macs header and do the can for the same price, but the 36 with BB would probably last longer and be easier to tune. Any input is appreciated. My LHS also said that useing all Hitech HS-81's would work in the Magic. I was thinking 225's with a pico on the throttle (I am going for the light weight and not the hoursepower approach), but will thew 81's work? Thanks for your help and replies. Joey

well
I have the Magic TT 42 combo- It will hover and pull out but REAL SLOW...
The 36 would be a better match if you are shooting for the lightweight approach- james |

Joey,
I had a magic with the TT36 combo, and it rocked. APC 11/3 prop, a 4 oz tank (2oz smaller than stock), and a mini on the throttle. Stock heli muffler would hover it under 1/2 throttle on 15%. MCP gave it more power, but a much narrower needle valve (my can was too large, giving me burst of back pressure at the wrong time). I would highly recommend this combo with the plane. Also, don't use the 81's. If you must use non-standard servos, then go with at least hitec 225s. There's a pretty good chance you'll strip the gears on the 81's. I had futaba 3003's all the way around, and never had a problem with torque or flutter. Definately brace the tail with either wire or cable. Helps keep the tail intact on full throttle blenders. Put some tri-stock around the firewall (with either thick CA or epoxy) to add some strength. I did a wing bolt conversion with mine, right from the start, but it wont let the wing fly off on lightly dorked landings. I also used a piece of pressure treated lattice in place of the original wing joiner, because it was not a tight fit at all. I put a 720 nimh battery about halfway back in the tail. Dont even think of putting a battery in the stock location (under the fuel tank), it will be extremely nose heavy. Even with all these mods and the standard servos, I was at 3 3/4 lbs. If I were to do another magic, I'd use cable pull pull wires instead of the hard wire pushrods, but still use the tubes. Less binding and slop over time. |
Magic Engine
OS 52 with a 11X5 prop. It is a great engine and the plane will do everything with this set up. Not sure where the CG is. The plane will fly inverted with very little up elevator.

Razor,
Are you using the stock muffler with your GP 42? Several guys on here seem to really like the Magic/TT42 with the mousse can muffler setup. Wade |
dannafinance
Did you mount the OS52 at that 2 stroke muffler clearing down angle or something else?? I'm going to be mounting my 52fs tomorrow night and was thinking about setting it at 90 degrees or even maybe inverted!
What does everyone think? Getting closer every day, I can't wait! I might have to play hookie friday... :D I hope my boss doesn't read this! |

Razor, Im running a TT42 w/ MCP combo swinging an 11x4 APC and Im hovering at 1/2 throttle and pulling out with authority. I absolutley love my setup and wouldnt change a thing.

Snag!!!
I was just centering my ailerons to install the servo rods by putting small clamps on the wingtips and,,, I have a 1/2" difference at the fuselage. It appears to be all in the left aileron.
What have I done? CA'ing went smoothly, the wingtip looks good. Could the aileron be warped? How do I fix it? Is all lost?   |
yup
I need a moose can!
I am still messin' with the set-up but I obviously need some hair care products for better performance- Any recipes? |

I like the Rave cans because I can get them for $.99 at Kroger. Pouring $.99 down the drains seems less wasteful than pouring the $2.99 mousse down the drain for some reason.
Heres the websites that I used to make mine. http://www.uoguelph.ca/~antoon/hobby/mcm.htm http://www.geocities.com/paducahrc/Article3a.html |

I mounted the OS 52 on a 45 degree angle.

Alright magic owners, here is my question. How quick can one of these be built??? I have a club funfly in a little over a week. Can I whip it out in a few evenings?? I have a Magnum XL.46 with a tower pipe, will it hover if built light??
Thanks, KsFlyer |

Well the magic is ready to go. I just finished it up. I am really happy with the weight. I am at 3.5 lbs ready to fly. I check the CG and it is sitting at 115mm with the tail very slightly down. Below is my setup
Saito 40 FS 4 @ Hitec 225 MG 1 @ Hitec 81 6V 720 mha Nimh 4 oz tank. The battery is right behind the fuel tank so if I want to move the CG back all I will have to do is move the battery. I would of gotten a test flight tonight but my son is sick. If all goes well I will get some flights on it tommorow. |

KSflyer,
Funny that you said that. Our club has a funfly on sunday and I ordered my magic and servos from tower. The plan got here on Tuesday and the servos on Monday. I started last night at 9pm and was just going to repair some shipping damage to the wing and fuse. Well when I first looked at the clock last night it was 2am. I wasnt tired so I kept on building. I finished up at 10:30 this morning. So a long anwnser to your question is yes it can be built in about 10 to 12 hours. |

One more question, I was gonna use a Magnum .46 with a tower pipe, but now I'm thinking of using a OS 40 FP with a tower pipe. This should be lighter, but will the plane over with this setup and a 11X4 prop??
THanks, KsFlyer |

An apc 11.5x4 is a great combo for a 46 Should have no problem hovering and pulling out.

Therotund1,
Sounds like something is a little warped. I checked my wing and ailerons for accuracy before I put them together. I didn't have to do anything to mine. It sure would be easier to correct an aileron before it was attached to the wing. You should be able to use a heatgun or iron to heat the covering and take out a warp as long as it's not too bad. I've done it on a control surface before but it was before I attached it. One of these other guys may have a good idea for your situation. Don't worry, you should be able to fix it somehow. Fishgod, We'll be waiting for the flight report with the little Saito. |

KSFlyer, The plane was designed to fly and hover with an OS 40 FP. If you build it light (3lbs 12ozs)'ish and the OS is still strong you should be okay. I might recommend a Macs header and MCP to liven up the motor. But if you have any concerns just throw the 46 on it. I used to be of the opinion that the heavier motor powered Magics didnt fly too good but I flew a guys this weekend with a GMS 47 on it. His didnt have near the control throws that mine does and it was more nose heavy and it still flew good. I was able to hover his down low enough to where a tail touch was possible.
And if you have good building experience which I assume by the time you want this model you do, the plane can be literally slapped together in about 4 hours. Truely the easiest and fastest ARF I've ever built. |

Just flew my magic for the first time yesturday, and I have to say thanks to stevezero for the setup ideas. I did just about the exact same thing, tt36 pro with HS-425's on main surfaces and a pico on throttle. Wow! This thing is increadible! Off the ground in 5 feet and straight up. I had all sorts of questions regaurding what 46 I had up front, and I have never seen an airplane that would flat spin like this thing will. I can get it to actually CLIMB in a flat spin! The people at my field just stopped to watch, and this was the first time I ever flew the plane! My girlfriend had to drag me from the field, I would recommend the Magic to anyone who can fly a trainer and wants to have a little fun.

Well I magic with the saito 40 fs. I setteled on an apc 11x3. It does rev abit high but I had no need to go to full throttle. I am going to order some 11x4 and see how they do. The plane Flys really nice but. I think the 32 or a 36 is the ticket. It will hover but there is not a ton of power to pull out. The motor is still quite new so I will give it some time. I flew in my first fun fly contest this morning. I thought it was going to be cancelled because of wind. The wind started out at about 10 with gusts to 20. Wow nothing like learning the funfly competition the hard way. By the end of round 1 it was just howling. I ended up 2nd place in sportsman and I took 1st place in the bomb drop. There were a few times that my plane was actually flying backwords. Lots of fun. Next funfly contest is in July. Now its time to practice pattern and IMAC. I will take the Magic to work with me and fly it a lunch.

I'd get the engine broken in good and experiment with a couple of props, could make a lot of difference. What % nitro you running in the Saito?
