RE: Flat Spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
The key to a good flat spin on the Magic is to have enough rudder. Just a little on the tail heavy side doesnt hurt. You dont have to too terribly much elevator...as a matter of fact the sweet spot on the Magics flat spins is usually left full rudder, about half right aileron and just the right amount of elevator....sometime mine would flat spin better without any elevator once you got it spinning. But again....you need that rudder to move about 60 degrees or better.....the more the better. Just remember to use expo!
Once you get used to the flat spin you can just fly into them as opposed to the old standard way of stalling into it. I would just slow the plane down...real slow....pull up just a little on the nose and then feed in the left rudder while feeding in the up elevator and right ailerons. The Magic is one of the flatest and fastest flat spinning airplanes Ive owned. Once you get your first flatspin with it you'llbe amazed. |
RE: Flat Spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Thanks,
Looks like I need more throw out of my rudder. :) Lou |
RE: Flat Spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Quite simple actually. My cg is 5" from the leading edge. I get a little altitude and chop throttle to a reliable idle. Throw it in to a possative snap and slowly neutralize my airerons. Then add a little thrttle to force the tail down and watch it spin:D. Inverted flats and blenders need a little assistance from spoilerons slaved to your elevator. Man you aught to see it blender OMG!!!!

RE: Flat Spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
I had a Magic that I rebuilt the tail on to add counterbalanced control surfaces. It was beyond wild! I just lost her recently because these planes are flown on the edge. Now I have a Weston Cougar 2000 and she's even better. The thing that I have found in flat spins that works is to actually start it as a positive flat spin but then give it opposite elevator it doubles the speed of the spins but still remains a positive spin. This worked on both planes eqully well. I also like to do inverted snaps that stay in one place as long as you can take it. For the money the Magic is one of the best fun fly planes ever made. Given all that though my next fun fly plane will be the Koyosho Flip 3D.

RE: Magic owners thread
WOW! Glad I found these posts. I've been flying my Magic with a 40 fp. It's OK but not great. I have a 46 sf with a long tuned pipe on an Ugly Stick that I'm going to put on the Magic with a Tower Muffler. Your 46 sf report is encouraging. My Magic will do flat spins nicely inverted and otherwise. If inverted I go into it from vertical near stall with down elev then left rudder & right ailerons that get less - near center when spin starts. Throttle is key to work in as much as you need. With my 40 fp it won't hover but I'm sure it will with the 46 sf.
What a great little plane. My has crashed a couple of times - running of of altitude before the right ideas kicked it. Easy rebuild though with some reinforcements. I do think I'll get another one this summer. Bruce |

I thought all of you would like this ;)
The Magic Finesse! Basically everything on this has been cut back to save weight, so much so that when left for a long time the surfaces warp lol, AUW is just over 2lbs and powered by an OS 32sx Can't be bad since the last 2 fun-fly champions used them! |
RE: Magic owners thread
How cool is that? Just a suggestion if you want to ramp up the Magics performance is to remove the wing tips. I did this to mine and it's so much better! Even if you take a look at the one in the pic it has a smaller wing tip. With the tips removed it rolls at such a fast rate you can't count them. Mike

RE: Magic owners thread
Anyone totally flatten the wingtips? Maybe even add vortex plates like the Wasp?

RE: Magic owners thread
er, crossly, stop giving the colonials our secrets:):) these funflys are a straight copy of the magic, made with the permission of the uk importer, who the 2 champions who are mentioned fly for the fuselages are a box structure, shaved to shape, and sanded until the light from a 12volt bulb, dangled down the fuzz can be seen through the wood, then cyno is sprayed from the bottle on the fuselage insides, to toughen them up, never had a brake yet the tail and flying surfaces are from 3/16 soft/medium sheet all strips being cut from the same sheet for each surface, the wing ribs have MINIMUM sheeting, have a good look at the wing spars, look strange? yes they are, they are t shaped carbon spars .020"thick, rips have just a slot cut in for the upright of the t, one on the top, one on the bottom gives a girder efect, never had a break there either, this year, all the tailplanes and ailerons are being replaced, not because of warping, but because of damage sustained, the tailskid is interesting, ever wondered what to do with those large futaba discs you get?? cut a slot in the fuzz underside, insert disc, and cyno, bit of baking soda, as a fillet, and there you are, one skid, wear it out, get a pair of pliers, twist it a bit, turn it round, glue it again engines are os32sx with weston throttle pipes, you guys should really try these they are from the company that imports the magnum in the uk the all up wight of the aircraaft is just under 3lbs, radio is a mini, lying down for the throttle, and standard 3001s for the rest, closed loop is used throught for control surface actuation, they have given good service but i think that this tear, the lads are retirng from fun fly, and concentrating on display flying have a good 2004, may all your landings be upright

RE: Magic owners thread
i am trying to make the lightest magic i can, i was planning on a supertigre g-51 with pitts muffler to save weight (have one layin round) micro throttle servo, and a 2 cell lithium battery to lighten it further. i also ordered an electron 6 reciever. should have plenty of verticle due to the g-51 gave my 5 pound avistar unlimited vert. any oppinions?

RE: Magic owners thread
The best engine I have ever seen in the Majic is an old Webra 32. I havwe had 3 of these and I always put a 46 to a 52 in them. After seeing one with a 32 I learned how good it could fly.

RE: Magic owners thread
There's a guy at our field that flies his Magic on a Webra 32 and it's ballistic.......[X(]
|
RE: Magic owners thread
with os 32 will it hover easily with how much throttle on a 4 oz tank and fairly light but basic set up? Will it pull out with authority?
what is the best combination to hover? |

RE: Magic owners thread
Trying to revive the Magic thread, hate to let a fun plane dicussion like this die. ;) I have an older Magic, just about pulled the rudder & stabilizer off Weds. after giving her a workout. Just finished repairing the damaged area and I'm going to add flying wire or rods this weekend. I'm using the 46LA that came with it and it seems to have plenty of power, pulls vertical until you can barely see it. I was using an 12x4 APC, but experimented Weds. with a 13x4 thin APC and it really improves the low speed flying. Nice and stable at idle, pullls like a raging bull! Once I'm in a flat spin, it looks like the elevator has little affect on the flat spin. I can go from up to down elevator without any change in the spin. If I go to neutral on the elevator it wobbles a little bit.
Question: How do you guys do a climbing flat spin? Mine flat spins fast and is slow to come down, but I'm not sure what you would do to get it to climb? DG |
RE: Flat Spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Are you guys using the stock wire landing gear, or what is better. Anyone have a link to something? Thanks, Ernie
..... oh, I am thinking of getting a V2 magic for my Webra 35 black head ringed engine. Anyone ever seen one of those?? Ernie |
RE: Magic owners thread
Looks like it might be only you and me on this thread..... anyway, I've got the original gear and while tall, it seems strong. Mine has been brazed where the two braces come together. I would have wrapped them with copper wire as well, but they seem to be ok for now. I searched this tread and the only suggestion I found for a replacement was either a Moose Carbon Fiber Gear or a TNT carbon fiber landing gear, he said to get the gear listed for a Sig Something-Extra and it works good. If I were you, I would try the original one until it fails. Being as tall as it is, you can really go with a large prop without issue, I'm running a 13x4. Also, if you time it right and get this bird up off it's tail while applying throttle, rudder and elevator, you can spin it on one wheel like crazy on the ground, looks pretty wild, just don't give it too much down elevator or you will strike the prop. Have fun! DG
ps, I've never had one, but the Webra .35's are suppose to really have some pep, so I would think it would be fine. I'm running a 46LA and it's plenty. I wish mine had the bolt one wing like the V2, rubber bands suck! |
RE: Magic owners thread
Hi Stickdude, it's you and me but that's okay! Maybe others will hop back in. I'm going to check out that carbon gear for the Somethin' Extra just for the heck of it anyway. I don't have a Magic yet but if they're still $99 at Hobby People I might get one soon!

It looks like Hobby People has them on back order, and they are listed for $120.
I have one of these that I won in a club raffle a couple of years ago. I set it up with a $25 Turnigy motor from Hobby City, a 60A esc, and 2200 mAh lipo's. It is under 3 pounds and it is a blast to fly. I can't do a lot of full-throttle flying with it, or the battery will get hot. It really needs a bigger pack, but I don't fly it all that much. It's a perfect setup for fun-fly events, though. Short flights, wild aerobatics, and it's always ready to go with no tuning. |
RE: Flat Spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Cool little scale there on your bench with a hook on it. Is that for fishing origionally?

RE: Flat Spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Well guys, my Magic is on the bench for a while. I was wringing it out tonight, flat spins, hovers, harriers, and lots of fun and craziness. I decided to go with the " just one more" flight before dark and was practicing low harriers landings/circles and one of them got away from me, it fell out about 5' high, cartwheeled, and broke the fuse behind the wing. [:@] A friend took a photo on his cellphone, I'll post it if I can get a copy. It ended up in a unique position, nose to the ground standing straight up with the fuse at 90 degrees:D. Anyway, I'm going to put a twist together this week, then I'll start the repairs on the Magic. DG

RE: Flat Spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Hey guys (if anyone's still reading!)
I'm just finishing up a Magic I won at a club dinner. I went with electric but am having balancing issues, and wondering if anyone else went with e-power and what they used and how it worked out. I don't want to dump too much cash into this plane, so stock gear for me, but I wrapped all the welds in thread and soaked it in CA. That's been enough to mend the destroyed fiberglass gear on my 120 Yak and should hold up OK on this plane. Also went with bolt-on wings. Should be fun to fly, but my CG is WWWAAAAYYY back. Tried 3S, 3600mah batts and a Turnigy 3536 motor I think. Just borrowed a CG machine to see if moving the motor forward will help much, but I doubt it. |
RE: Flat Spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Hey Joe, thanks for reviving this thread. Keep us posted. I am still thinking of a Magic since I have two .32 size engines.... an OS 32 and a Webra 35. Wadda ya think?
Thanks, Ernie |

One thing I forgot to mention in the PM reply I sent you, was that I had to put the motor out on some pretty long standoffs in order to get the CG forward. If you look in the picture in my post above, you'll see that I have about 1 1/2" of aluminum tubes behind the motor. I just bought a bunch of different lenghts (1/2", 3/4", 1") and bolts to match, and I kept adding them on until I got a decent balance. You could probably have the motor sticking out 2-3" from the firewall and it would still be OK. Good luck |
