That oughta work!

I think it looks dang spiffy! It has enough difference between top and bottom you can tell. Now for the test flight phase!!

And as for acid flashbacks...that's just an urban legend. ;)

Yes I can get more throw I think. Right now it has about 47 degrees of throw in the rudder and elevator, but only 30 in the ailerons.........with one more hole to move the clevis to for more throw if its needed, but I am thinking 30 degree aileron is good for me now. I also slide the battery forward a smig and have the balance point between 1 3/4" and 2" back from spar.......I think that should do it to begin with.

FF540P build

Ed, My OMP FF540P is unopened in the box awaiting completion of my Menace. How did you find this plane to build? Easy/difficult? Any tips or suggestions? Bob

In looking back, I would rate it as an easy build with some things to watch for when I build another.

1) make the tunnel "slightly larger"
2) make the wing opening (for the leads) "slightly larger"
3) Plan on making my own tail servo leads about 14" long.
4) Pick better colors for covering......hahahahahahahaha

That was the only real problem I had and even that could have been avoided if I had be more forthright with questions here on RCU, and taken more time to think things thru.

Servo Leads

The leads on the tail servos, are the only thing holding me back from getting one of these. Is it (relatively easy) possible to internalize these things without trying to cover over them?

Or, if they were moved forward a couple inches, could you at least keep the extension plug inside the wing?

As to the covering, I'm speechless. If I brought that to the field, the guys with give me sh*t for the whole summer. I used scrap covering on a plane once, and although mines not as physcadelic as yours, it was deffinately different.

Alright man I bet you're excited! Looks great. I would throw more throw in the ailerons and everything else. Just dial in some expo. I would move that cg up under 2 inches. I'm basing that info from others and having flown a tail heavy (that's relative, all my profiles are tail heavy). But a really tail heavy bird will get you fast!

I believe with some patients and clear thinking it can be done fairly easy. I think the best and easiest way would be to make your own leads with only the one connector that goes to the receiver, I know that would be a piece of cake, although I never thought of it until it was brought to my attention after the fact.

Billy
My radios dont have expo I dont believe, but I will move the clevises to the top hole for the most throw available to me, and see what I end up with.......I know I am maxed out on servo travel adjustment on the rudder and elevator, so moveing the clevis up to the last hole is my last move.
Do you run flaperons or elevons? or do you run either?

Ed, I uset to think "what do I need expo for,,my fingers are the expo!", but now haveing a radio with expo.....I dont know how I enjoyed flying back in the day when I didnt have expo capabliities............This may help....start throwing hints around the house that you need a new radio....see if the wife bites<GRIN>.....Gator

(I'm just finishing mine, coincidently.) I'd rate it an easy build compared to other wood kits, mostly because covering is easy on a profile. One thing to understand is that the only cut pieces you get are the ribs and the light ply piece for the fuse in front of the wing. Everything else is sticks. But it all goes together very quickly, just pin everything down tight to the building board to keep things flat.

On the tunnel, I think it's big enough that you could use regular extensions, but if you do, the extensions will be in the tunnel. I think that makes some of us a little nervous, but if you slipped a piece of shrink tubing over the connectors and shrunk it down, that would keep the connectors from coming apart. I just soldered longer connectors to my servos, which only took 10 minutes or so.

I have only two problems with the design, both minor. The first is that the throttle servo is tough to mount since you can't get a screwdriver there inside the wing. The other is that the servos in the tail make it difficult to balance with a one-pound engine such as the recommended ball-bearing .46.

One other thing I'll throw out for the other builders... Did you think the ribs were too thin? Mine would break if you breathed hard on them, and I ended up gluing little balsa "splints" vertically on almost all the ribs.

I didnt think they were thin as much as light weight??
But giving the fact that weight is to be kept to a minimum I can understand why they are how they are. I had to force myself to be cautious when I got my fat ole hands close to them. Lucky for me I did not break anything during the build.

OMP FF540P build

Haven't looked real close but is there room for an HS-81 mini servo mounted through the fuselage aft of the engine for the throttle? Will use HS-425's for primary controls. 270ma battery. Don't know which motor I'll hang up front. Choices are a Tower Hobbies 46, MVVS 45 on a mini pipe or a YS 45 on a tuned pipe. Do these build tail heavy? If so, might even hang a Saito 80 to keep from adding nose weight. We'll see once I get it framed up.
I fly with Hitec Eclipse transmitters and normally input a -60% expo for ailerons, -45% thru -50% expo on elevator and zero expo on rudder. These settings work well for me on my Top Cap, Extra Special, Magic and SE with 45 degree plus throws on all surfaces (except SE elevator). 70% on dual rates.
