Default Engine Surge??

I was flying my old Napier last night and 2 out of the 4 flights I had an issue with the engine surging and almost quitting after a hard turn... I had a decent amount of smoke and the engine tached at about 23 - 23.4K on the ground with the black prop(V3).. I thought maybe I had some air in the tank so on the 4th flight I took extra care in fueling, set the needle at about 23.2K pinched once, sounded good on the ground but still surged and caughed and sputtered after a hard turn... Any thoughts??

Other than that it was a blast and I can say I've officially be bit by the Q40 bug... Thanks Pat G. for the donatation of the old Napier to get me going and Cole T. for the good deal on the engine.

Sounds like a tank / air / fuel line problem to me. I'd replace it and the fuel line, put in a new glow plug, and try some new fuel.

The fuel is a brand new gallon of Powermaster so I don't think it's that. The tank is new as are the lines but I will check those out and see how they look... I checked the plug after my 3rd run and it looked pretty good....

Try a new plug anyways, and put that one aside. Sometimes a plug will look good, and light nice, but the engine still won't run right. Wouldn't hurt to try, easy check.

I'll try that... I got all those plugs from Del, I might as well put them to use

Maybe I'll have to bring it up some weekend and let the experts have a shot at it.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. I'm new to the Q40 thing so it's all good info...

Here's another couple things to check. Check for a pinched fuel or pressure line. Also, are you running a filter? If so, check it for junk. The only time I ever seem to get debris in my filter is within the first dozen or so runs on a new tank. If your not running a filter, remove the needle and flush it out...

I'd like to but I'm forced to head up north(Bemidji) for a family reunion... It will be a good time but with gas being $3/gallon over here I don't know that I want to go.

If every other thing they have told you is OK. (Air in the tank, plug etc) check if your back plate is OK, the same happens to me 2 weeks ago on a Q500 and the back plate was loose.

Regards-
