Standard servos will work fine in the viper with that engine. If you want to upgrade a bit, and not much more money, Hitec 225 servos work fine as well as Expert SL451 servos. Both of those servos are about $25 each and will save you weight and make your life a little easier getting everything to fit. For the throttle, you can use a Hitec 80, 81, or 85 or even a standard if you'd like.

The only thing I'll add is to find a smaller battery, a stock 500 mil or smaller is all you need.

The red plane pictured uses a 250 mil 4 cell Nicd

As to the 250 mah battery, we use them quite a bit in racing. Its not really how many flights, but how much time your using them.

When we race, the plane is on and pulling juice from the battery for usually less than 4 minutes per flight. We can run a test flight, and race 6 heats for just under 30 minutes on the battery and be just fine. Now if you put a 6 oz tank in there and fly 10 minute sport flights, your probably good for 3 flights max.

If you are using Nimh packs and have the ability to charge them, I would suggest a 720 mah NIMH pack for sport use. Its roughly the same size and weight as the 270 mah NICD pack and will give you significantly longer flight times.

Here is a pic of one of my vipers servo install. All servos are Hitec HS-85's except the aileron servo which is a hitec hs-225. With the throtle in the back it makes room for a tettra bladder tank. These servos work just fine and they are not very expensive. You can see the reciever in the back and the battery is right under the rear wing hold down bolts.

if u want good packs i would look at www.superbaterypacks.com i get all of my 750s from him and they r awesome packs

alot of people dont trust this, but i use Hitech 85mg servos for the v-tail on both of my Neme-Q+'s and they both perform flawlessly...i had the Expert SL451 servos in my proud bird and they were stripped before i got a flight...i dont trust them at all...the Hitch 225 is also a good servo... i use them in the wing od mt Neme-Q+'s as well...hope this helps

I like the hitec 85's for throttle, but thats about it.

I primarily use the Expert SL 451's on Rudder, Throttle kill, and V-Tail halves, but thats about it. I dont use them for Aileron or Elevator on a Q40. The Hitec 225's are decent in terms of torque, but don't center well.

I know Cole has been using the 85's on v-tail halves and a few other guys as well. I'm still not ready to go that route, but maybe a Futaba 3102.

greetings, I run standard jr servos in the viper, yes are heavy, and run the tt46 engine. In order to get the model to balance I position both battery pack and receiver in front of the servos- yes just in front of the former so they are actually under the wing servo. Build a little balsa box to hold the battery and cyano the box in place to the bottom of the fuselage. We run an 'intermediate' class of pylon here where the min weight is 1800 grammes so using a slightly heavier battery this model can be bought up to the required weight without any bother.

Hey thank you for all your sugestion. I end up using 4 standard servo on my airplane and a 4.8volts Nicd 600mah battery
just like BIGTREV I have to move my battery almost under my aileron servo to achive a corect C.G. 75mm back from the leading edge. Its okay for me not to be very light weight I just want to have fun.

On my first post I said I will be using a thunder tiger 40. I endup getting a New Evolution 46 nt very cheap motor and i heard alot of positive coment on this being easy to tune and realiability. will see on my first flight.

and sugestion on prop size. my hobby shop recomend a 9x7 apc any good

seems like alot of pitch....but not knowing anything about the evolutions motors,,,if it achieves the proper RPM for that engine use it,,,,9X6 works well with most other 40's

Cole,

You said..."i had the Expert SL451 servos in my proud bird and they were stripped before i got a flight".... So they stripped on the bench, during radio setup? what surfaces did they strip on?

Why don't you send those to me. I'll replace them at no cost to you... It might be good feedback for those folks, maybe they could put out a ceramic/metal gear type servo if our loads are too much...

Just a thought, Lyles Q40 aileron hinges are pretty stiff. If you don't reduce your rates or ATV before powering up the servo, I could see stalling out or even frying gears on a 451 if the servo goes to full deflection. I'm not picking on Lyle here, the stiff ailerons work fine, but their travel is definately limited. Lyle recommends the Futaba 3002 (metal gears) for his wings and they do work well, although a little heavy and slow compared to some of the digitals.
