composite vs balsa and monocote
what makes a composite Q500 faster?? IS it the fact that it is painted vs monocoated?? Givin the same nelson motor is paint faster than monocote?? If a wooden plan is built strait and strong why wouldn't it be just as competative as a composite plane??

RE: composite vs balsa and monocote
This has been hashed through a 100 times on various pylon forums and I will stick with my feeling that a properly built wood airplane can be competitive. Unfortanately the majority of racers out there either don't have the skills or time to build them, let alone consistently.
Many find their time is worth more than the price of an arf (composite) as thats really all it is.

RE: composite vs balsa and monocote
Not "can be competitive" "is as competitive".
Just a little harder to get them right free hand vs a mold. And at 50 cents an hour it only cost me 50 bucks to build a quickie. I'm thinking maybe just maybe I might start buying composite wings especially after my latest scratch built wonder quickie only made it through 3 1/2 heats before a mid air.
