Glen Spickler Quickie 500 Article
Guys, I’m looking for the original Glen Spickler article in the AMERICAN AIRCRAFT MODELER December 1972 issue on his Quickie 500 racer. Anyone out there have this magazine and could scam me the article? I’m finally getting around to finishing up the prototype kit I had laser cut this year and want to have the article just in case I decide to take it to a Vintage RC Society event.
BTW I’m also looking for a stock Semco flow thru muffler for a K&B .40 strap on type and possibly the 2-1/4 thin Kraft wheels too if you got any laying around!!!
Thanks,
Bob Harris

Are the Kraft wheels the same as the K&B wheels? I have a bunch of those. I may also have the Semco muffler you are looking for. I'll have to look.

Yep Barry, can't decide on the radio yet. I flew mine with an EK but I have both a Kraft and Royal Classic system I may put in it. I got a NIB K&B .40 8011 from a guy last year so if I can find a muffler and wheel she will be just like they were when the Spickler Quickie 500 started all this crazy racing!!![sm=spinnyeyes.gif]
Denis, as I remember they were the speed wheels, the one that the wheel collar was inside the hub and were kind of tapered. I've got a pair somewhere in my mess but have not be able to locate!!
I'll post some more pics of the progress!!

The vintage radio's are neat but, I just don't have time to pursue them. I do plan on getting all four of my GSQ500's together and flying. Who knows where they will show up. It was the aricle on it that I am interested in. To many planes to build and not enough time.

I still have one of those I fly once in a while. But I have a piped Rossi 40 on it.
Yes the K&B wheels had the pressed together tapered hubs in side the wheel.

they are kraft speed wheels, they use three screws to hold the hub halves together, tougher than old boots as well, wish they still made them

Thanks Jaka! I got the wings built and almost sanded out. I order the white Ultrcote to cover her with as well as the Hayes motor mount for the K&B .40. I disassembled the old K&B and gave her a good cleaning and have her back together. I hope to run her on the stand this week. I still need a Semco or Mac Strap on muffler (HINT,HINT) to get her complete as well as some 2-1/4 Kraft or K&B racing wheels. I plan to color her the same as the picture.
I even have an old Kraft transmitter the same as in the picture!! It works quite well. Maybe even put the old system in her to fly. She’s on 27 MHz and still legal!!!!![sm=spinnyeyes.gif]
I'll try to post some pictures of her in the bare bones soon!!

OK guys, here she is in the bones! Hope to start covering her this week. Most likely use Ultracote and Rustoleum or Klasscote for the colors. Still need to mount the engine with blind mounting nuts and such. No muffler or Kraft Hayes wheels found yet but I've got a few feelers out. I also lessen the dihedral to 1/2 what was on plans. Funny the article says the rudder works just as good as the ailerons!! Most likely with that dihedral!!!

Yep, that's a original 8011 .40. I also have a new one just don't have the mufflers! I may drill it for a OS .25 FX and/or a Thunder Tiger Pro 40 for a backup you never know. At the January SPRA race in Hickory NC we had a guy flying an original Quickie 500 35 years old with a OS .25 FX. He was up there in the pack every race and was turning some good times before finding pylon 1 with the outer wing!![:@]
Remember the fastest time I turned at Lowes in Quickie 25 was with my Quickie 500 MKII. Basically the same as this original except skinnyed down to meet todays specs and a slight airfoil mod. In the right hands she could be very competitive!!
