HurriKane Kit

1 Attachment(s)
I ordered a HurriKane kit from www.supertrc.com a couple weeks ago and started assembling yesterday. Dan Kane uses many of similar tab/slot construction techniques I used on my seeker and it looks like an easy build. He also has some great instructions set up on his website. I started with the fuse yesterday and after a couple hours everything was looking great.

I got a brain fart tonight and decided to mount an extra Neme-Q tail I had laying around gathering dust. Dan has a light ply fuse spacer under the V-tail that is set at zero degrees incidence. Terrences tail also has a flat bottom that is also set at Zero Degrees. With a couple minor fuse mods, I mounted the tail to the fuse and now will have a removeable bolt on tail.

Here are a couple pictures of the progress.

Looks good Dave, especially the landing gear :D

The pictures above are about 3-4 hours of work over the course of 2 days. Very simple to build so far, and everything has fit together very nice.

I like to use landing gear that Lee LeValley makes in Wisconsin (I try not to hold that against him). I grinded down a set tonight and buffed them up nice. The Arch setup works very nice, and will bend if a rough landing is made (which is easily straightened).

I was a little concerned with using an 1/8" landing gear plate because of the rough grass field we race off, so I decided to double it up with another piece of 1/8" light ply. Dan's plate is a bit bigger than my seeker plate, so its probably ok, but due to our field I beefed it up.

I had to raise the tail off of Dan's plate under the V-Tail. I used a couple blocks of 1/4" ply which was about right to get the Neme-Q tail even with the fuse sides. I trimmed the height of the fuse both in front of, and behind the tail to make everything look "correct".

I lost a little side area since the tail sits a little lower than designed, but since the Neme tail is so tall, I think I will be fine.

I know, I know, the tail is red.

I don't plan on repainting it either, this will be an all Red/White, and Black airplane.

Mixing it up.

Lee must have snuck that post in when I wasn't looking :)

Some of you may remember that red tail off a Red Neme that was lost and nearly given up for dead in Rockford a few years ago.

The plane was salvaged after an UltraLIght pilot spotted it about a 1/4 mile past where we were looking.

It was lost a couple years later, and needs to fly again.

I was a little concerned about balance with a shorter coupled plane than I am use to flying, so the bigger tail should help out.

We will see.

It will be interesting to see it go.. Are you going to use it for OS class or 428??

daven 05-09-2006 07:29 AM

RE: HurriKane Kit

428 since it has a Neme-Q tail on it.

Not sure what they sell for, but add that to a $100 Randy wing, a $50 fuse, and I'm sure I'm over our local $200 rule.

I'm thinking about Red, white, and blue now with maybe some sort of Twins logo on it.

Maybe something like this. I sent it to Randy to see if it was possible.

Nice bird . Wish I was rich enough to afford one or two.

The fuse kits are only about $50, you can buy a sheeted wing from Bill Vargas for another $60.

Thats a pretty cheap racer, this hobby isn't cheap.

Oh man, I'll beat you hard now with the twinkes on your wing

Beat me hard?

I was the only one to beat you on Saturday. Plus you had some good practice with Julie and a radio down on one. Next time, I won't be using a break in motor :)

Twinkies rule, but not sure why they have the Chicago Bears C in the center of the logo.

yeah, don't use a broken down motor...

That motor had only been in the air 4 times before the race.

Forget it Randy, stick to the program.

I could have beat you Jesse if I had a composite like you :D That ought to get someone going... I suppose it would have helped if I flew outside the poles too:eek:

the motor you won for me had about 5 flights on it, thanks again for entering me

Dave,

I think you need to change the red to Blue and the blue to orange and loose the T!

Then you can truly, proudly display the Bears logo.
