Pattern: mostly done by UGLY! planes, big smooth aerobatics, you have to get very anal about making your loops and stuff perfect, even flying in a straight line isn't easy
possibly one of the most skillful disciplines
3D: the planes past the stall point, your flying on engine power alone, and it ain't flying the direction its meant to be. includes prophang, torque roll, all those weird spins that defy gravity. done by funflys and scalish Extra looking things, large surfaces and over powered engines required.
Aerobatic. a more realistic version of 3D, and less fussy than Pattern, using any plane doing things that real planes can do

come on, you all know the story of how the elephant got its trunk, a Pattern plane is like someone using a restraint on the tail and gave a bit too much power, their just ugly. loo long, just look all out of proportion. the real problem is they try to look like real planes. Limbo Dancers, Magics, Cougars and such may be ugly, might look like vultures comming in on a kill, but they don't hide behind canopys.
however, i have much admiration to someone who can make flying in a straight line hard work, lol years of flying and skills go into feeling like a newbee again.
Pattern looks good when done right, flown like sports planes, wrong

Keep in mind that Sean D Tucker can HOVER and TORQUE ROLL and HARRIER......so not all of OUR 3D is undoable by full scale
I have yet to see Patty or Sean or Kirby or Matt or whoever do a HIGH ALPHA ROOLING CIRCLE

i've not seen full size aeros for a few years, prophang wasn't doable then, i've love to see full size do this, and propperly. i consider prophang to be propper when you decide it's time to come out, not because your about to fall out

Thanks for the answers and the humor guys, Makes me wonder what class I am in. When a plane does what it wants .
Actually I got my T-Hawk to fly inverted today. looked bad but was way cool. no ailrons. came out of loop on top and flew inverted .

Well I will say... If you practice like the pattern people do for a while.. And strive for perfection, then fun-flys are cake and you will feel much more confident about yourself.
