Default Wing Area

Sorry for the total noob question but is there a formula to figure out the wing area of a plane? Guessing it isn't just a length x width thing.
Thanks

For a constant chord wing it is just that simple. For a tapered wing you section it to a rectangle and a right triangle and add them together.  The area of a right triangle is 1/2 of the base  leg x the height.  Double the area of one wing to get the total.

Just add the lengths of the tip and the root and make a rectangle using the length of the span as the other two sides

If you use half the total wingspan (or the span of one side) you will get the area for the whole wing

One other thing. Some companies add the section of the fuse between the wing halves to their wing area. If it's a low or a high wing it's a non issue. So if you come up way short of what the factory wing area is supposed to be, keep that in mind.
