Default Airplane cleaning question please:

Hi there, im trying to find out what would be the safest and most efective product that could be used to clean fuel and oil residues from planes covered with monokote, ultracote or any type of covering, after a day of flying?
Anything special? Any special mix?
Regards and thanks.

Seems like people ask that question every few days if not weeks.

I use a product called "Invisible Glass," made by 'Stoner,' and found at (shudder) Wal-mart. It has more alcohol than Glass Pluss or Windex and cleans better with less streaking. Fact of the matter is, the wife found mine and used it one day, and took over my bottle because of the same reason (don't understand why she's cleaning castor oil off of the windows)!! Oh well! We both have our own individual bottles of 'Invisible Glass.' She says it's much better for cleaning windows than the other two aforementioned products, and I can tell you it's much better for cleaning castor oil from the plastic iron-on coverings, and painted fiberglass surfaces as well.

Over the years, I've found that "Experience is a hard teacher. She always gives the test first, and the lesson some time later!"

Basically any glass cleaner with amonia or commercial degreaser you buy in the store (like 409) works just fine.

I thought you were not supposed to use any cleaners containing amonia on a plane covered in Monocoat because the ammonia dissolves or weakens the adhesive causing the seams to start lifting. I use windshield washer fluid that contains alcohol with a little dish soap mixed in. It works great.

Amonia will activate the adhesive on MonoKote Brand covering, but when you're just wiping off grease, you're not using enough to really do anything. It's not getting under the covering, only on top. True, it can touch the seams, but again, it's such a small area and there is so little amonia involved that it's really a moot point.

I just use a bit of Dawn mixed with water in a spray bottle. Never measured out the Dawn I just "dumped" some in. Seems to work fine.....
