RE: Are ASP Engine Good Engine??
ASP and Magnum are both manufactured by Sanye. They appear to be identical but I do not know if there is a 100% parts interchange on every model.
One reason Magnum costs more (in the US) is because Global Hobby provides warranty support for them.
I suspect there is no warranty on ASP engines in the US but that is speculation on my part.
If the price is good enough, lack of warranty may not matter.
My brother had two Magnum 91 four stroke crankshafts break in one season. Global repaired both engines for free.
I do own an ASP 61 two stroke and it has been a very good engine.

RE: Are ASP Engine Good Engine??
I have run many Magnum 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines, all with good result. Currently, I have an ASP 61 4 stroke on a floatplane, and it has never let me down. I can recommend it.

carrellh & huck1199,
Thank you both for your input!! Like I said before, I do have the Magnum 1.20FS and is a very good engine, but she is getting old and time to replace her. It is hard to look at the price for the Magnum 1.20FS and the ASP 1.20FS The ASP 1.20FS is 192.00 and the Magnum 1.20FS is $299.99. No way am I cheap, but, now days you try to save some money.
Please keep all the info coming. It is a big help!!

For over the past 35+ years in this hobby, I have only had one engine that went in for warranty work. If the engine run good right out of the box and last for 1 year or more, I am happy!!
Thanks again for your input!! Every bit of info help alot!!!
HAve a great weekend of flying!!!

RE: Are ASP Engine Good Engine??
i have 10 asp engines, 52 2s-, 61 fs,- 120 2s,- 120 4s- 1802s- 1804s -400radial all with plenty of running, i run the 4 strokes with 12.5% oil, no nitro and the 2 strokes with 15% oil, no nitro,
30%castor, the balance coolpower oil, perfect running and idling engines with plenty of power and no rust or corrosion problems, imho nitro is a hoax, my engines run much better
without any and use less fuel, also have os, super tigre, moki, all run fine on the same fuel, you cant beat the asp for value for money and parts are very cheap compared to other makes,

RE: Are ASP Engine Good Engine??
Hi Sonny,
I got an ASP 52 FS second hand with an ARF model I bought. It looked like it had not done much running but had clearly been overheated (the cowl was poorly built with insufficient cooling).
There was a bad score in the bore, the cam followers were also badly scored. When I turned it over the pushrods rubbed on their covers. The exhaust valve leaked badly.
I gave the bore a light hone, and tried unsuccessfully to get the exhaust valve to seal by grinding, maybe the leaks not at the valve.
The engine runs perfectly even with the remaining faults. It starts easily and is totally reliable, idles well and makes good power (I use zero nitro fuel). The engine seems to use more fuel than my OS engines and carbons up way more.
I understand that leaky exhaust valves are a known fault with the Sanye four strokes and leaky carbs with both two and four strokes.
So personally I prefer the quality of OS or Saito, but if I had to buy another engine I would be very tempted by the price of Sanye engines and spare parts. I am certainly happy with the way my ASP runs.
So should you buy ASP or Magnum? I have no idea how well the warranty or repair process works in the states but If you were happy to deal with potential small problems like sealing a carb with silicon, and if you were able to return any engine that turned out to be a total dud then you would probably be happy with the ASP. Is the peace of mind of the Magnum warranty worth 100 dollars to you?
Hope this helps,
Dave H

RE: Are ASP Engine Good Engine??
I have 6 ASP /Magnums 40 - 91 2 and 4 strokes
I use 2 61 2s on a MACs pipe and have been thrashing them at WOT most flights the are over 2 years old now. The 4 strokes just wont die untill the dirt kills them..I did over prop a 61 4 stroker and destoyed the piston due to detonation..
I have had 2 52 2stroker that gave me a lot of grief but have passed them on.
The only fault Ive had with them all is the main brearings start to fail just after run in. Fit a set of Jap brngs and bulit proof..

RE: Are ASP Engine Good Engine??
Hi Dave,
Thank you so very much for your input. I sat down in the shop last night and did a total cost of the P-51 that the 1.20FS is going in and I was shock!! I want to put a $190.00 engine into a $1500.00 plane, I must be nuts!! Like I post before, I do own a Magnum 1.20FS, that I found on eBay. That was 2 years ago and the owner did not say how long did he had it. I do want to have a peace of mind and don't want to have a engine that don't run right out of the box. This is why I ask the RC family this question. Will I pay $100.00 more dollars to have a peace of mind, you bet you"A"!!
Thank you Dave and all who have post input on this question. Everyone has been a big help!!
Have a great weekend of flying everyone!!
