Default Front Gear

Does anyone know for sure which way the coil on the front gear of a tricycle setup supposed to be installed? Is it so that the coil tightens as the wheel hits bumps or is it supposed to loosen as it hits bumps? I've seen them both ways and they both seem to work, but one way must be "correct".

I built one of the orginal Falcon 56's by Carl Goldberg & it had a non-steerable nose gear with the coil to the rear . I always figured that Carl ALWAYS knew what he was doing as did Hal De Bolt . Good luck on yours , Max H. AMA 14958

Tightens, However I have been known on many of my ships where I have used tricycle landing gear to eliminate the coil altogether.

With the few tric's I've owned, I always had the ciol to the rear so as to tighten up upon landing.

Coil to the rear...tightens as you land too hard...protecting the bottom of the airpalne

I have a couple Avistars with trike gear that I use for teaching. After a few hard landings, the front gear will be bent back at about a 30 degree angle. I have turned the gear around several times with no problems. When the gear gets bent again, I just turn it back around, I've not noticed any difference either way.

To paraphrase a signature:"In theory, there is no difference between tighten and loosen; In practice, there is - tighten looks cooler to most."
