I don't know.
Here's how I was taught though: My dad was the trainer and he would stand right beside me and I flew high so if I needed help I handed himthe radio. Worked just fine .

Depending on the Transmitter you may need to get a different cord. I have a 8fg, and a 6ex. The batteries on the transmitters are different, so a regular buddy cord would not work, I had to buy a special cord to use. This cord was over $30.00. I think the number for the cord was 12fg

Most but not all Futaba txs will work as a buddy box. Look to see if it has a socket.
Older Txs had a round socket. Newer ones are square.
The slave needs neither battery nor to be switched on.
There is a Futaba support forum here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/futa...ort-forum-125/
Once you have the exact model numbers of both Txs you could ask there.

The manual for your radio should tell you what transmitters will work as buddy boxes. My first Futaba 2.4 had a somewhat restrictive list, the newer one takes any Futaba transmitter if you have a cord with the right kinds of ends. Some (all?) Futaba 2.4 transmitters have to have the "trainer" function enabled to work with a buddy box. Again, your manual should tell you how to do that.
