Default Adjustable Engine Test Stand

I'm fabricating an engine test stand. I'm trying to figure out how wide to make the engine mount opening. This is for beam mounted engine. My largest engine has a 3" wide mounting flange. The steel flat that I have will allow me to go 4" wide. Four inches wide should be enough engine for my needs. But, you just don't know in this hobby. Anyway, suggestions and advice are welcomed.
