Default Tail Wheel Problem Question?

I have a Model Tech Fun Fly airplane. Old glow engine plane I have been flying at a grass field. It has no way to connect the tail wheel to the rudder. If you've ever seen one you'd understand. It has just a wire for a tail wheel. That doesn't work on a grass field. I made a longer more flexible wire with a wheel on the end. That works a little better. I have several Morris Hobbies profile planes with those. I'm wondering about putting a regular tail wheel that swivels like used on most planes and just letting it free wheel. In other words it won't be attached to the rudder. Does anyone think that will work? Just let the rudder do the steering. That's what I'm doing now, but not working well with the wire method.

I have used all swiveling tail wheels on many airplanes. Works OK.

I have a 92" Edge, plenty of rudder to not need a connected tail wheel, so when the wire fell off I just left it, but when taxiing at slower speeds or in a cross wind it does create issues controlling the plane

I’ve got a Quickie 500 that I installed a free castoring ( 360 degree ) tailwheel on. Can’t taxi at all but reacts well to rudder on take off. On landing it’s controllable to a point but once it slows down I’m unable to taxi back. I’m going to modify to limit rotation to see if that helps.
