Hinges, kinds and differences?
I am in the process of building my very first kit and was wondering what type of hinges to place on it?
The plane is the OMP Yak-54 Profile.
1. I would please like to know how many different kinds there are?
2. Does it matter which application they are used on?
3. Which are most preferred?
I have heard that over time the material CA type hinges grow brittle over time thus causing a possibility of breaking.

There are really 2-3 basic kinds that are most popular; CA Hinges, Hinge Points and Pinned Hinges.
I personally prefer Robart Hinge Points. They come in three different sizes based on the size of your application. I've never had a CA hinge fail, but then none of my planes have ever been more than a few years old. All of my .40 size planes have nothing but CA hinges and I've never had a problem. On planes .60 and over I would go with the hinge points. A Stinger .60 I just built has Robart hinge points in the ailerons since they are pretty long, but I still used ca hinges on the rudder and elevator. I personally wouldnt use pinned hinges. If you do ca hinges right, I feel they are safe. The robarts give added strength and longevity, but make sure you install them correctly. If you use the hinge points, I would also recommend you get the drill guide to make sure you get them straight.
For your OMP, CA Hinges would probably be fine though (IMHO).

Thanks rik756, I just so happen to have one of those drill point guides. I won it as a pilot gift in a big bird event. Maybe this will give me the chance to use it.

Sorry, but you know I had to give you a little jab!
For that plane, I would just go with CA hinges. Do 'em right and they'll last forever (Well, I have some that are more than ten years old anyway).

LoL, maybe I was a little too basic. I read the part about first kit and didn't notice you've probably edited more posts than I've even got... My Stinger was my first kit. I really like the Robarts, but overall CA are still quicker and easier if you get em right. I have the gapped hinges on my rudder and elevator. I covered the wing and ailerons prior to installing the robarts, I did the ca hinges on the tail before I covered to make sure I got max wicking on both sides.

Somewhere barried over in the profile forum you'll see some pictures of the build. I believe the subject has something to do with covering Yak-54
The wing was by far the most troublesome. I still have the second half to go, Oh! and the covering I'm sure thas going to be a learning pain.

I'd say the covering was the most frustrating part by far! It probably took me longer to get it all covered than it did to build it lol. Once you get teh general concept down it's actually a little fun when the pieces come out like they are supposed to. It's when no matter how you measure and cut it that it still doesnt fit and you've wasted a foot of ultracote that it's gets irritating.

One side of the vert stab looked a little raunchy since I ironed it all down on all the sticks. The other side looked much better just tacking the edges and shrinking it with a heat gun in the middle.

The pin through the CA, yes that is a great trick, also putting Vasiline on pin hinges heated with a gun to liquefy, gets in the cracks better and keeps the laminate out.
I was just unsure of what type of hinge to use.
