Gliders, they do it all the time. Sorry, couldn't help it.

Trainers, just about any of them.

Most planes with a light wing loading.

ANY of the planes as long as it doesn't have two wings.
Once the engine stops, your concentration level increases since there is only one try. If I don't have to come in downwind, most of the quiet landings are smoother than under power. Using gas, dead sticks aren't a factor.

Any airplane is good at landing dead stick. It goes dead-stick it WILL come down.

The question is... is the pilot familiar with (or capable of handling) the dead-stick characteristics of the airplane.

I haven't had any airplane yet, that after more than 6 flights, I hadn't had to do at least one dead-stick landing.

Worst case is dead-stick, on take-off of a new airplane that isn't trimmed yet and you've never practiced stalling. You don't know for sure WHAT the heck its going to do when you stall it. (and you will stall it in that scenario. Murphy owns the situation.)

The lighter loaded the plane is... the longer you can keep it airborne dead-stick, and the slower the landing wll be when it gets down.

Biplanes (and triplanes) bleed speed like a stuck pig. Beter find the runway fast.

What ever you do, keep the nose down to maintain speed. Don't try to flare it too much until you are just about to touch down.

I'm wondering why this question was even asked. Do you have an engine that doesn't work? I think a better question would be, "what is the most reliable engine?"

Best idea i have for why ask....

The 30 sec clmb and max glide event at some club fun flys.

Our club made the mistake one year of not setting a TARGET time. One member had a LIGHTLY buuilt "Perfection" (locally kitted model similar to an oversize ultrastick) wiht a 1.20 4-stroke... he caught a thermal... 32 min and the other conetstants all said "We give up... you won the Fun-Fly."

I'd vote for a Kadet Senior for easy "back to the runway" deadsticks. I have a Sig Komander that will make 3 circles from 150 feet before it needs to set up for landing.

best deak stick comp gliders i see are funflys with HOT 36's, 20 seconds can get 8 mins of gliding in.
next best choice is a hot liner, 20 seconds and it's out of range

For a climb-glide-spot landing event we had, I went for a 2M glider, OS 15.
Practice went perfect.
Competition.... shortest motor run (lowest altitude). shortest glide, but NAILED the spot.
All the other planes overshot the spot on landing so badly when their higher altitudes (we used an altimeter watch), and longer glides were normalized to the highest numbers, the best of these were overwhelmed by my luck in landing.

Our club fun-fly... f you begin the contest with one airplane.. you have to use that airplane for all events... unless the model is irreparable. (not simply damaged and the guy doen't want to field repair.... in that case... he forfeits.)

We are MEAN![>:]

We'd have said swap engines... the airplane isn't broke.

We are so mean... I snapped my fuselage IN HALF... my option was fix or forfeit. (5 min epoxy and CA to the rescue..) I managed to have together for the next round... and broke it in half again They said... fix it again... you proved you can.

if anyone had a spare West 50 that would have happened. i even tried to make it run again.
reminds me, i did that to a LEO 37 at a speed day, i crossed the line with my Outlaw delta doing 97Mph upwind. when i landed i had no bearing cage, just balls in the ring

I won a gallon of fuel at one of our funfly's last Summer. I lost every event, but was able to keep my plane together with some moving tape and a few CA gluing sessions for broken parts. Poor plane was a wreck at the end, but I was still flying. Afterwards, I took it home and spent 2-3 weeks making the needed repairs and recovering. On the 11th flight after all repairs were made, I hit a bird and the wing and 1/2 of the fuse pretty much disintegrated. It was a fitting death for a plane that helped me place last in the funfly.

Knowing what the events will be at the anual sanctioned Fun-Fly... I plan to build a "Answer" from August 1940 Model Airplane News because its IDEAL for 3 of the 4 events. and the 4th... Well those rudder rolls are going to be interesting. (3 loops touch-n-go 3 rolls.)

The climb and glide... should be a shoe-in.

any glider guider can spot land a 1940's FF design for the spot landing event.

And the darn thing has good ground handling for the taxi to bust balloons race. (fudge the landing gear wider)

Too bad I can't think of a good way to put ailerons in it... (I have built one and RC converted it before...)

The guys are gonna laugh like heck when I bring it out...

Dynaflight butterfly has got to be the best with a .09-.15 motor and a 99" wing span![sm=spinnyeyes.gif]thier was a guy at our field who put a OS.46 on his that thing was wild as hell.Still an exelent glide ratio.
