Default CA hinges not grabbing

I had hinges on one side of my elevator stick great, the other side is a little loose, I may try some thicker CA tomorrow, any other ideas on a fix?

I would not use a thicker CA. Thin is all I have ever heard to use. It will "wick into" the hinge and balsa better than a thicker CA. Are your slots too wide where the hinge is real loose in the slot? The best CA adhesion is when you can barely get the hinge in the slot. Can you cut new, thinner, slots if that is the case? Some say to put about 3 drops on each side. I use more than that and have never had a hinge pull out. Once applied to one side .....hurry to the other side. Apply there, and
work the hinge a little as, or before, the CA sets up. This will keep your hinge more pliable. (some also use a crayon to draw
a line across the center of the hinge on both sides. The wax will repel the CA in that area and help the hinge be more pliable....

Do not use thicker CA!

With CA hinges you only get one chance to get it right. Now you will need to either pin the hinges in place, or remove them and either replace them with a different type of hinge, or use fresh CA hinges next to where the old ones were.

Did you drill 3/32 holes in the center of each hinge slot? This lets the THIN CA wick deeper into the slot for a better bond.

Mike - I just want to thank you for that "How To" article. I have been using CA type hinges for about as long as they have been around, but yesterday was the first time I tried installing them using your method of drilling a hole in the center of the slot. I was installing Radio South 1/4 scale hinges (the best IMHO) on a 60 sized Kaos. The hole technique allowed the CA to wick in a lot faster and hopefully with more penetration than if the hole had been omitted. I'm a believer of this method and will continue to apply the technique. THANK YOU for promoting the hobby in such fine fashion.

Flattery will get you everywhere, keep talking!

But seriously, thank you Ed, it's nice to know that not only do people read those things, but that they actually GET something out of them.

The hole in the slot center is something I forgot to mention. I have been doing that for several years now and it works great.
I don't know the brand...... but I only use the CA hinges that have a small "slot" cut out, in the center of the hinge. This, in
addition to the 3/32nds hole in the balsa's slot center........allows the CA even MORE penatration. Like I said, never a CA hinge
failure!!........ lownslo
