i have a 4 year old OS .40 LA engine that was damaged in a crash a few years ago.. the damage is nothing just a cover plate and a needle valve. i was looking at tower hobbies and the cover plate is discontinued. would a .40-.46 FX cover plate still work?

From: gone,
The new version LA backplate will fit. The FX series backplate will NOT fit. No Ball bearing engine backplate that I know of will fit the LA series engines.
Then get the Tower .46 remote needle. ($12 appx) The mount holes for the remote needle don't quite line up. (the hole spacing is the same as the FX backplate holes) Just use the one closest to the needle and it will be fine. Or you can mount the needle to any convenient location within one engine case length of the back of the engine. You can also drill the mount plate that comes with the needle to make it fit the back of the engine...
Just about any remote needle mounting is OK... I have seen them held in place with a zip-tie and it worked fine. (might be able to do that with the original needle if the backplate broke in the normal location...)
You may be able to just file off the broken needle mount section of your backplate and then keep using the original backplate. The needle mount portion is useless when you get the different needle.
I have a Tower .40 and a LA.46 (the LA .46 has the same backplate as the LA .40) and I intend to test the x-over fit of the backplates.. but haven't got around to it.
The reason your old version back plate was discontinued is... they were breaking too often. That is the whole difference between your LA and the newer version LA.
The Tower remote needle is a better remote needle than the one made for the LA. Its less expensive than the OEM part... (considerably) but its less likely to have air leaks.
