Default Alpha tail wheel conversion

I am converting my Alpha trainer from tri gear to conventional with a tail wheel. I don't think I can rig up a steerable tail wheel very easily, but will a free castoring tail wheel work half way well? Would a tail skid be better? thanks, Jim in OK.

A castoring tail wheel will work OK in still air & on smooth grass or a flat runway, if you have lots of maneuvering room. Otherwise, particularly in a crosswind, it will be be a pain in the tail. I suggest that you find a way to make it steer.
