Default Adhesive backed sandpaper & T blocks

How do you remove the adhesive from T sanding bars? I've tried acetone but it's hard going. A single edge razor blade works but it's also hard going.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Maekju

Soak it in paint thinner, then scrape with putty knife. Razor blade is not good: it makes burrs and uneven surface for re-use.
To remove the left over glue, can use laquer thinner.

I presume you're buying the pre-cut, self sticking backed sandpaper as they can be a chore to remove.

If this is the case, save yourself some money and aggravation and buy the sandpaper at your local hardware store and cut to fit the T-bar. Lightly (operative word here) spray some 3M-77 spray on the back side, let dry for a couple of minutes, then apply to the T-bar.

When it's time to remove the sandpaper, it should peel off leaving only a slight glue residue that can be easily taken off with acetone and a scrub pad. Should any paper backing remain on the T-bar, acetone and a putty knife will be your friends.

I have tried acetone, lacquer thinner, paint thinner and rubber cement thinner and nothing works.

I use a heat gun to heat the sandpaper and it comes right off with very little adhesive left on the sanding bar. Alcohol works to remove the left over.

Roger the Goo-Gone! Works great for removing adhesives including that from masking tape. Regards.

I started using a water soluble glue for my T bars. Just use water on the sandpaper to loosen, finish cleanup with good old dish soap. The glue does take some time to dry though.

I use carpet tape from hardware store and it is pretty easy to peel off.

Good tips guys. I'll give em a try. I was using the self sticking backed sandpaper. I think they made that stuff so you would have to buy new T bars.
Thanks for the advice.
Maekju.

Clamp the bar in a vise and use a heat gun and spatula. It will take it right off. Then use lacquer thinner to remove the adhesive. Acetone evaporates too fast but can be used as a final wipe.

I agree with Ed Stefan as far as sandpaper goes. Adhesive backed sandpaper is never good quality. Buy good sandpaper, cut it slightly over size, apply a light coat of spray glue on both the paper and the block and butt the pieces together to cover the entire block. Use an old blade to trim it.

I have to disagree here. I bought some of this sand paper (yellow in color), 150 grit and man, that stuff never wears out or seems to get clogged. I thought I was paying a lot for a small roll of the stuff ($6), but I just built and sanded a 1/6th T28 and only changed the sandpaper on my T-bar once. Of course I bought some 400 grit at the store to do the final sand.

I don't know what brand name you bought, but I find the "SandBlaster" (I think by 3M) is more expensive but definitely worth the extra money. This stuff lasts a lot longer than any other sandpaper I've purchased.

I don't know if this comes as self-adhesive backed, or not, but the regular backing is very good.

Thanks again. I'll try that Sandblaster paper when I return to the states (and decent flying fields).
