What can spray paint to use on nitro float plane ?
I have a float plane that has silk span and several layers of clear dope on it. I would now like to add some colour and was wondering what would be the best spray paint cans to buy to do so. They would have to be fuel proof, or I guess I could add some sort of fuel proof clear coat after I put the colours on.
I was just wondering what other people have done in this situation and any ideas would be greatly appreaciated.
Remember the paint should be nitro proof and waterproof as it is a boat plane.
Thanks

Any ACRYLIC lacquer/enamel is fuel proof. There are many automotive paints available and many paints in the non automotive line also.
For the most part, if the can is not labled as an ACRYLIC lacquer/enamel assume it is not fuel proof and plan on clear coating it. To be sure, do a test panel. Let the paint dry at least 48 hours and put some fuel on it. You will quickly know if it fuel proof/resistant.
Be careful of compatibility. You can put enamel over lacquer, but not the other way (The paint will wrinkle and "craze" ).
For clear coating, again, there are several options. Lusterkote or Ultracote clear, oil base and/or water base polyurethanes are what is usually used. Each has good and bad points ranging from cost to being fuel RESISTANT.
Personally, I like Ultracote clear and water base polyurethane.

All my 60 size and smaller float planes i just covered them in monocoat. Never had a prpblem. The main trick is to have no seams on the bottom of the float. It hold up very well.
