Default Modifying a Tachometer

I would like to be able to build my own control system to keep a 2 stroke glow engine at a constatant RPM. I need a signal sent to a compuiter of the RPM of the engine. Do you know of a cheap tachometer that would work on a .40 size engine that would read out RPM? Could I modify a cheap tachometer like tower hobbies sells to output that signal? Thanks for your help.

It would be easier to use a Hall effect sensor pickup like the use on the model gas engine ignitions? http://www.ch-ignitions.com/

Enjoy,

Jim
