Default Painting on covering?

LOL I’m the first one to admit that I’m no artist. I hate doing the final touches design on a plane. So I though Id try some thing new and paint it on. I haven’t decided on a brand of covering yet It kind of depends on what I can find matching paint for. Any one have experience panting on covering? What kind of prep is required?

It all depends on the covering that you get. Monokote and Ultracoat typically do not do paint real well. You will need to scuff the covering with some 00 steel wool and give it a shot. Good Luck, Dave

I have had good luck with the one plane I painted over monokote. As Dave said, scuff with steel wool and then clean with acetone. The plane pictured has been flying for a few years now with no paint loss.

If you want to paint on the covering, I suggest a fabric covering such as Solartex. The only things you will need to do is clearcoat the edges of your making to prevent bleed under, and I suggest clear coating the plane after to make it easier to clean. Solartex has a more open weave and picks up the dirt easier, however, even with the clear coat it is still noticeably lighter than other fabrics.

I have had success painting scuffed Monokote. In the picture attached I used clear Monokote, masked off the plane and then painted with Lustrecoat. It has stood up well to my abuse.

I have used Fusion for other applications but not for a plane. One word of caution is that it will not stand up to rubbing alcohol (ethyl alcohol or ethanol)(it will wipe off easily even after being fully cured) , so I would check it with methanol (methyl alcohol) before using it.

This is what I received from Krylon
Danny,

Thank you for visiting our Krylon website, we appreciate your interest in our products. The Krylon Fusion has not been tested and approved on Monokote. I can tell you that if this shrinkable plastic is of a soft material/plastic, it is likely that our product will not work on this substrate. The Krylon Fusion will fail when exposed to fuel; sheen will degloss, coating could bubble or peel.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Rustoleum works well. See my thread about my RV-4, Ultracote painted over with Rustoleum.

2 yrs old, still looks like new!

Default RE: Painting on covering?

A flying friend and I ran out of stuff to do one day and decided to test a number of spray can paints for durability. One of his old sport planes was "sacrificed" . We scuffed an area directly behind the engine exhaust; cleaned with lacquer thinner and shot with Rustoleum the Krylon. A few other paints were used, includeing a polyurethane.

The plane was flown for a summer and by the end of that period it was apparent which paint performed best. Rustoleum, while not good as new, held up much better than the others. Krylon was about the worse.

What i received from rustolem

I have used the Stops Rust Protective Enamels on both Monocoat and Ultracoat with good results .Make sure the covering is cleaned well with rubbing alcohol then scuffed well with 0000 steel wool. I do not recommend using the Rust-Oleum Clears. I have used both the Monocoat and the Ultracoat clears over the Stops Rust products with good results. I have run up to 15% nitro without any problems with the coating. Make sure you allow the finish to completely cure (can take up to a month depending on the conditions) before firing the engine up. http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp...ct_id=18&SBL=1
