MonoKote Cub Yellow
I am recovering a Piper Cub for a friend and ordered a roll of MonoKote Cub Yellow from Tower last week. As I was applying the monokote I noticed that grain coloration was showing through. The stuff is almost transparent!!![:@] Has anyone else ran into this or did I just get a bad batch?

RE: MonoKote Cub Yellow
Screw monokote......
To be factual however. Yellow coloring be it paint or plastic covering is always a problem when trying to hide what is underneath. I use automotive paints, yellow is one of the most expensive because of the additives in it to try and make the paint hide better. When I say expensive I paid $180.00/qt. There are even more expensive auto paints available.
Try Coverite Fabric, it has a weave finish, Hides prettyy good, goes on much better than Monokote and looks more realistic.

I tried coverite fabric on a small piece before but was unhappy with the frayed, stringy edges I was seeing. Perhaps I need to look into solving this problem because it seems that this will be the direction I will be heading in the futrue.

Maybe I should have been more specific. The covering I refered to is "Coverite 21st Century Fabric". It does not have stringy frayed edges.

Gotcha, [link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXB188&P=ML[/link].
$21.00 bucks a roll, man they sure are proud of this stuff. But if it works, it's worth it....

I agree with Ed. The 21st century coverite fabric is the way to go. It hides better and looks great on a cub! I do go through more blades though. So have extra razors on hand to trim. My best regards, Mike

I bought my paint at the Sherwin Williams auto paint store. I searched for my receipt but typically, I can't find it. I bought a gallon of white for about $150 and bought pints of black, met red, met gold, met silver and primer. I believe the primer was something like $37 a gallon.
Of course I had to buy the hardener too. I don't remember of it being that costly. I still have 3/4 a gallon of white and a can of hardener. I was told that the colors won't go bad but the hardener will have a tendency to, well, harden while in the can.
I used 2nd DIMENSION 5.0 ACRYLIC ENAMEL. Why? That is what the store manager said I should use. I'm happy with it. I could have bought much less but I thought better too much than too little. My $200+ worth.

RE: MonoKote Cub Yellow
I just tried to use my Cub Yellow Monokote_ same problem. The stuff is indeed transparent. I assume you have to prime the parts before applying this color. Anyone done this? Will the Monokote stick as well?
A couple of questions for you guys
1. Is there a different brand of shrink covering I should have used?
2. Remembering the 60s here,,, does anyone still use tissue (or was it cloth?) and clear dope? As I recall we used that system on some fairly large planes.

If you want that plastic look for covering and you don't want to see thru it, try Coverite 21st Century Film Cub Yellow 6' at $12.99 from Tower.
I've used it recently and do not see any wood thru it. It is really opaque.
Don't waste your money on paints to solve the solution.
Use the Monocote on a plane that you don't care too much about.
I have some old monocote on a plane that is 20 years old and it still looks good. The product must have changed. I'm reluctant to buy more monocote since it is getting such bad press.
I do like all coverite coverings. Another 2 cents worth. Ron

RE: MonoKote Cub Yellow
Thanks SEBO. I'll pick up a roll of the film and try it. In the meantime I guess I'll just have to prime before using the rest of my existing Monokote (I bought the 25' roll).
I might just splurge and use the Coverite fabric on my yet uncovered Sig 1/5 scale Cub.
