Default Saito 82

Hi

What do you guys use to hold your sait 82's to your engine mount... I had 6/32 steal bolts one inch long with locking nuts on the end this worked great but after about 5 tanks of fuel and one flight i came to remove the engine so that i could add more right thurst and found that all four bolts that hold the engine to the mount are bent so I have to replace them what kinda of bolts do you use titanium? tongston carbid?

Thanks,

Steven

I also own that engine but I have yet to use it. I assume it performs well?

I use 6-32 consumer quality steel screws without any problem on my Saito 72. The idea is that the screw creates contact pressure between the enigne and the engine mount. The friction of the contact is what holds the engine in place, not the screw. Maybe your screws were not tight enough?

One can get high-strength steel screws and titanium screws from an industrial supply house like McMaster-Carr, but they are expensive .

They were tight and i know they didnt lossen because of the lock nuts but just the pull of the engine bent the bolts ....

so far (i have only had about 2minute on the sticks) this engine preforms great it pulled my 6+ pound plane verticle and wasnt showing any signs of slowing down at about 70% power but i didnt push it to see what it would do because it needs ALOT more right thrust in the time it took my to climb about 250 feet verticle with no rudder input (test to see if i ahd enoguh right thurst) the plane was at 45* side ways it had pulled so much to the left[]

it looks like it well be a great preformer, the dead stick was my stupidity tryign to get a low idle... there wasnt enoguh sunligh left to tryanother flight that day.

Steel bolts come in different grades , you may have used a low grade, which are much softer than the higher grade. I use Dubro Hex head socket bolts on my Saitos with out any problems

I have 6x32 allen screws holding my saito 120 with no problem; you must have very soft screws. That engine will only provide a pull of about 6 lbs static and far less in the air.

I use 4-40 stainless machine screws and have no problem with them bending on my .82. 12x9 pulls about 6 1/2 lbs. 13x7 pulls 8 lbs. 14x4 pull about 9 1/2 lbs. This is a very strong engine in a small package.

How are you measuring these fantastic thrust figures?

Good thought. I know the top/bottom of the beams are not parallel on the Great Planes adjustable mounts. SIG mounts do seem to be parallel. I've never had any other brands.

If you can file or sand the bottom of the beam parallel to the top, I think the problem will go away. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it needs to be as close as possible.

Scratch only. To answer your question: by testing of course. Perhaps you should experiment or actually own an engine before you comment on its performance.

Just asking how you test. The best I can do with a .91 saito is 7 1/2 lbs.

I own this motor and it is a nice running little power plant. It seems to have a vibration band just above idle and I stay away from that throttle setting. Make sure you are ballancing your prop and spinner. I use only socket head cap screws to mount motors. These are an industrial fastener and are much harder than usual hardware which is soft and can stretch. Just my 02 worth.

Blue skys.

Ok thank you,
carrellh you are correct now looking at it its the tightening of the nuts that bent the bolts.

I own a saito 56, 65, 72. 80, 91 and 120. I think that is enough to speak on saito engine thrust.
