I have come into posession of a 1950's Dooling .29. It is in rather sad shape, and I would like to know what to use to clean it up and get it into possible running shape. What should I soak it in to free it up, and clean it up?
Any comments appreciated!
Thanks,
V. Sharp

Do a search for antifreeze on this message board. Folks use this in an old crock pot outdoors to soak old engines overnight to break down castor glaze and such.

Thanks, somegeek for the quick reply. I certainly will give it a try! I would love to get the engine running again and put it on something like a Ringmaster I had in 1956. Probably just a pipedream, though!

Mr Sharp it is only a pipe dream if you let it be There are many ARF versions of old controlline greats as well as new ones both from Great Planes but also Brodak among others.
Many vintage engines are well preserved because of the castor oils used. It tends to prevent rust unlike modern all synthetics.
Suggest you post on the controlline forum and you will get much info for your return to controlline as well as the ressurection of that engine.

Had talk with the McCoy brothers nearly a year ago. The Dooling is popular with the older set at Whittier Narrows Tether line car circle. If you run out or replacement parts, would try to locate someone there for a bit more information.
Was a fellow living near Fontana Calif. who sold parts on the Infamate Internet Auction Service, and had several Dooling pistons new in wrapper, but these applyed to a different size than the .29
