Quadra Question
I have recently just aquired a quadra engine. I am not sure of the size. It measures about 11 inches tall 3 1/2 wide. It has the number 3 stamped on the case. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.

RE: Quadra Question
I stand corrected. The Q50 did have a side exhaust, but this one may have come from a chainsaw that required a rear exhaust; then reworked into a model engine. I do know that the orange coils were used in chainsaws. I don't recognize the prop adapter, so it too may be one of a kind. The cylinder head is like a Q50 - not even close to a Q35,40, or 42.
I still say it is a Q50 of some description - but not the one manufactured for use in models.

RE: Quadra Question
No telling unless we know what it is. Is there any lettering or numbers on the flange where the cyl. bolts to the crankcase or on the coil.? What name is on the carb.?

RE: Quadra Question
I am glad that I found this thread!!!!
I just recently acuired a Byrons originals P-51 mustang with the quadra engine in it with the reduction sytem all installed and hooked up. It doesn't have the muffler on it though. I do not know which quadra it is. I do know that in the box, there was a flyer that said to stay tuned for the new 50 mustang engine that is coming soon. Going through the box was like opening a time capsule. Alot of the gear pieces are missing and some of the hardware bags but I plan to put retracts on it and replace the hardware bags through the manufacturer that took them over.
Anyway there was no instruction manual in the box on the engine and it has never been ran. It has just been installed setting in the box in a garage for over 28 years!!!! The motor still turnes over very well like it is still lubricated and looks very good. What do I need to do to get this engine flight ready? does anyone know of any on-line instruction that I can get?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

RE: Quadra Question
Hi Paul, Where should I start a new post? In warbirds, Building or engine clinic? I thought here would be good because you all were talking about Quadra engines. I am very interested in doing that if I know other people would be interested also.
Thanks, Jeff
Thanks, Jeff

RE: Quadra Question
Jeff:
I think they used the Q42 and Q 50. The Quadra 42 cylinder is tapered towards the top and the cylinder is one piece, splits at the crankshaft. The Q50s cylinder is straight to the top and bolts to the crankcase with a flange at the bottom. Should be able to get a muffler from Bennet Built. Do a google search for their website. Hope this helps.

RE: Quadra Question
Ok, Gord. That helps alot. I would rather see a 42 in this bird rather than the 35 I think that they put into some of the earlier models. I am new into gas engines so I have been reading and digging into this subject as much as I can. I almost bought a huge extra 300 last month made by Ohio products but I found a different plane to purchase instead (extra 330L with a 54cc taurus). The rather large extra had a quadra 75cc in it and the owner tipped me off to Bennet built, In fact, there is a lead to that company in our club website. I will take some pics today after work and post them.

RE: Quadra Question
It could be a Q 35 too. The crankcases are identical. What I do to tell which one it is, is to put the piston at the bottom of the stroke. Stick a popsicle stick in the ex port and touch the cyl on the opposite side, then turn the crank so it pushes up on the stick and makes a mark on the stick. Take it out and if it's a 35 it will measure 1.437 thou. or 1 7/16 in. If it's a 42 it'll be 1.475 or 1 9/16. in. Hope this helps even more. When Quadra Aerrow was still in business they were only 50 miles north of where I am so I was up there regularly. I ran a small motor shop bach then so they would send me repair work to do as they just manufactured motors. They used the motors on Frontier chainsaws, which is where they originated from, as well as weed wacker, woodsplitters, a little 110 volt generator, one of which I still have, and water pumps.

RE: Quadra Question
Sounds to me like you are the guy to talk to. On the bottom of the crankcase it reads made in canada and the number 81. so I know it is made in 1981 acording to recent posts by our great engine gurus. It has part of the throttle linkage hooked up too. Where is the choke? and it looks like I am going to have to completely remove it from the airframe to install a new muffler. Here are some pictures.

RE: Quadra Question
Whoops! I accidentally put that on fast reply. Here they are. By the way I got this kit for less than 100 dollars. I always spend top dollar for everything so it is about time I got a break!!!!

RE: Quadra Question
Poor mans choke. Normally there's a hole in the side of the cowl where you stick your finger into the carb throat to choke it. You don't need to turn the motor right over. Just pump a prop blade up and down like a pump handle. Crankcase pressure differential will pump the fuel up. Keep pumping till your finger gets wet plus a couple more and it will start with a couple of flips.
