Do you have the N number of that plane? I would be interested to read the NTSB report.
I don't remember the N number. The plane was based at Portage Co. Airport in Ohio. If I remember correctly, the crash was about 7-8 years ago.
The instructor was an older gentleman (probably 60-70yrs old). He owned the plane and gave aerobatic instruction on a regular basis. I don't remember anything about the student.

I remember a Skybolt did the exact same thing in the early 1990's in Oklahoma while I was going to Spartan School of Aeronautics.

I have aerobatic time in a Pitts and a couple of hours in an Extra 300 at Aerosport in Florida. Those were the days marriage and starting a business put my flying on hold.[]

I have a Lycoming TSIO-541 that I've been rebuilding as money allows for my next full scale project, a Glasair Super III RG. I can't afford the kit quite yet, but I'll get one in the next couple of years.

O.k. I give.........The Cap and the Norseman can wait.

Doug, How did you like the Extra compared to the Pitts?

Oh! Now I remember!, Did Jimmy Franklin fly the Waco with the turbine under it? The first time I saw him take off with that set up I felt like " This must be what it felt like when people saw the Wright brothers fly." I never have been more awe struck than watching that plane lift off.

That crew has had some bad luck over the years.

At first, I was all over the place in the Extra. The control forces were very light around center. I had a hard time keeping up with it! I only had three lessons in the Extra. It was so slippery... As soon as the nose went down the airspeed just shot up to Vne[X(] I scared myself more than once Haha I remember the instructor going "Woah! Easy now, Doug.. Watch the G's!" To me, the Pitts just "fit" After an hour of take off and landings, I felt as comfortable in it as I do my Cherokee.

Yep! That was Jimmy in the Jet Waco. Jimmy Franklin and Bobby Younkin were killed in a mid air collision. Last year, Jim LeRoy was killed at the Dayton Airshow. They have lost more than their fair share[]

Was that 29G in Ravenna, Ohio? I have searched the NTSB data base and there are no fatal accidents for a Christen Eagle going back to 1962. There were only 5 accidents that resulted in fatalities. 3 in Pipers and 2 in Cessnas.

Jerry

I don't know what to tell you Jerry. It was on the news, It was talked about heavily at the airport that I work at. I'll ask around and see what I can find out. But, I assure you, there was a fatal Christen Eagle crash very close to 29G. Also, I can tell you that there have been many many more fatal crashes than the 5 you found!

Off the top of my head:
THis year:
Cleveland Hopkins Beech Baron 1 Fatal
Sandusky? 172 plunges into lake Erie 2 fatal
N.W. Ohio Cessna 421 stall spin on short final 4 fatal

Last year:
Wayne Co. Mooney lost engine 1 fatal
Portage Co. Mid Air w/ Lancair & C172 Several fatal

Several years back:
Kidron, Cherokee 6 stall spin 3 fatal enroute to Cleveland Airshow
Medina Co. Rotorway Exec heli crashed in residential neighborhood 2 fatal
Cleveland Life Flight Sikorski crashed while trying to land in heavy winds. 3 fatal
Medina Co. BATF Cherokee 6 Ice, Overloaded 3 fatal
Weltzeins Skypark C-150 Suicide straight in off end of runway. Vertical descent from 8000Ft.
Wadsworth, Cherokee hits powerlines 2 fatal

And that's just the ones I remember! Ohio is one of the busiest GA states.
