Default How to properly dispose of nitro fuel

Crashed my CGExtra today. The crash punchered the tank and fuel was leaking, so I put the front half of the plane in a bucket. Long story short, I have about 10 oz of 20% fuel to get rid of. What is the best way?

The solution is dilution.

If you disperse it in your yard over a broad area, it won't harm anything. Just don't pour it all one one little spot.

Unless that spot has a dandelion (I hate dandelions)

There are 3 very active clubs in this area.  All are grass in the pits.  The only dead grass is from the gasoline overflows.

Control line guys have known forever that glow fuel ain't as big a deal as some will preach.  We fly from very much the same spot all day long, and almost every flyer will be in the same quarter of the circle (wind decides takeoff location).   The only thing the grass doesn't like is the foot traffic.

Don't worry about it.   If it's clean, reuse it.  If you must throw it out, THROW it out.

Please don't contaminate our environment or suggest that others do so.

The alcohol and nitromethane may evaporate but the 18% oil will remain in the ground as a pollutant.  It may not enough to be classified as a superfund site but it shouldn't be there.

The best thing to do with unwanted fuel is to find a proper hazardous waste disposal site.  Most communities have them and will take household amounts of waste for free.

Don't  we dump the oil into our environment whenever we run our engines?  The oil gets blown out the exhaust, not burned.

....I wonder if it is environmentally more friendly to use castor than synthetic?

I believe that a lot of the synthetics are simply "not petroleum" based.  I think some of the popular ones are actually "naturally" based, like on alcohol.

Castor is natural as is alcohol.

And yes, we do not burn quite a lot of the lubricant that goes through our glow engines.  Does anyone know what the "greeness" of our exhausts are?  both glow and gas?

Actually, methanol is toxic. As little as 4 ounces can kill an adult if ingested.

And its usedas a solvent and an anit-freeze in pipe lines.

So, don't leave it where a pet or child can get into it.

Methanol is a poison that should not reach the underground water.

Take it to a recycling facility or just filter it and burn it inside an engine.

The sink in my shop or the grate out in front of the house in the street work pretty good. It tends to leave a stain in the toilet though and Ihate cleaning the toile so Idon't use that anymore.

Unless there is visible crud or dirt in the fuel, I have put it back in my fuel jug for future use.

For such a small amount (10 oz) just dump it in the gas tank of your car before you fill up the next time.  The heat of the engine will break down the oil, and any that doesn't burn with get taken care of by the catalytic converter.  They already mix ethanol with most of our fuels these days, so a little methanol and nitro won't hurt.

seriously? take 10oz to a hazmat center? lol you would harm the enviroment more burning the gas to get their.

a few options

weed killer, lighter fluid, use it to clean engine parts, could make a candle out of it (mini tiki torch), ect

or if your lazy just light it on fire, down the drain would work as well.

In the forty years I've been involved in this hobby, I have never had to get rid of any.  When I've split; or, hole a tank, I remove the inline filter and simply pump the fuel back into my fuel container and use it.  Then I put the filter back on the fill line.  That will trap any gunk in the fuel contaner side of the filter.  Taking care of the fuel system is the priority for me, after a crash.  I extract the tank from the reckage and pump the tank dry.  As a matter of fact, I can't recall there ever having been dirt/gunk getting into my fuel system, after a crash.  The engine, now, that's a different story.

Digg a hole in your yard. Then line this hole with concrete, then place a thick plastic liner in it. Pour your 10 OZ of fuel there. Then cap it with a concrete cap. Then place a 10 foot high fence with barbed wire on top around the hole. The place warning signs around it. For an added measure place claymore mines around it and some more warning signs. A 24 hour armed gaurd is the last step............. or you could just re-use it in your model.

Oh no you don't. Not until you have completed the 5 year permit and licensing process, inlcuding public hearings, environmental impact studies, remediation studies in the case of a leak, etc. Then you can build your facility.

Sorry about the crash.

A process to consider is to use "Cheesecloth" as a strainer / filter over a clear jar, pour the fuel in and hold up to the sunlightlight to inspect for impurities. Should be good to reuse then. (Of course, have filters on your filling equipment)

If its still no good, ask anywhere where automotive / truck repairs are done. They ALL have re-cycle tanks.

I burn old fuel in a weedeater. Only problem is when I gun the throttle, I wind up on the roof!
