Lighten up my plane?
Hey Guys
2 years ago I bought a cap 232 3d profile flyer. Sold it after a few weeks and missed it very much. Yesterday I was so lucky and got to buy it back
It is quite heavy and I really want to lighten it up. It is powered by an asp 46 2stroke and it has 5 standard servos.
Any tips on how I can lighten it up without loosing strenght in the structure?

RE: Lighten up my plane?
Thanks Will the hs 85 servos be powerfull enough for the rudder? They will definately be good enough for the ailerons and throttle, but what about elevator and rudder?

RE: Lighten up my plane?
Probably not, they have small motors and gears so the stress may kill them fast. Ihave used them for small planes like yours in the ailerons and throttles but use standard sizes for the rudder and elevator.
If you ever decide to recover your plane then a hole saw on the fuse and wing sheeting works well, I remove a lot of wood on race planes, you just have to know where the stress areas are before you remove any wood or you can fold the plane.

Thats what I thought, I use hs 55 in a multiplex twinstar and even on that plane they seems a little weak. But great for foamies overall
The landing gear mount is reeinforced with ALOT of ply wood. So I will remove the covering and use my dremel to make lightening holes. What is the ideal weight for a 46 powered 3d profile?

If you dont want to cut into it, get rid of the wheel pants, find lighter main wheels, a Macs muffler instead of the stock one, smallest fuel tank you can enjoy flying with, small throttle servo, carbon pushrods.

Balsa Products - Blue Bird Servos sells Bluebird servos. The BMS380MG puts out 50 oz of torque @4.8 volts and there is the Bluebird Max - the same size but puts out 57 oz @4.8 volts. These servos weigh .58 - .64 oz each (a standard servo weighs in at 1+ oz each. I fly 40 - 60 size planes (OS 46FX, Saito 72, Saito 82, a couple of 61 2 strokes and several 40+ size electrics) and have used these servos for about 3 years and I have only had 1 bad servo out of 24 I bought. Balsa Products replaced that one.
If you decide to get them, make sure you get the MG - the nylon gear servos strip very easy.

Hi!
No problem for the Hs 85 metal gear servos to cope with any function. You plane isn't particularly fast!
Hs 85 servos has been used in Q-500 pylon racing without problem.

I`m not quite sure.. hehe
Its not fast but it flys extreme manouvers and the stress factor is high. Imagine the hs 85 in a knife edge spin on a 50 size 3d..

6 lbs 3 oz is pretty high for a slab; most are 5 or under. You can't loose a pound without a bunch of cutting; it would be easer to get a Mojo kit or other and make a clean start. Just fly as is while building.

RE: Lighten up my plane?
Yeah, thats what I figured Well, it flies awesome. It will hovver but it has no pullout what so ever. So the question is, new engine or new plane? Think I`ll go with a new plane. I wanna make plans for the exact same plane. Is there any point in ripping the covering off, and sand the wings/fuselage, and then recover it again?

They are all so similar, I would get a known kit and move things around to change the looks. It only takes a week to make a small profile; you would spend more time modifying the old plane with unknown results. http://www.swanyshouse.com/index.aspx http://www.extremeflightrc.com/html/ChinnYak55SP.html http://www.geocities.com/matchlessaero/ are your best bets.

Just a thought but instead of buying another plane why not gointo the M.A.N plans, pick out a planeand then cut your own kit, very easy. Then you can buy contest grade wood from Lone Star Balsa and pick out the lightest wood for your build. Not only a lot of fun but you will have the only plane of it's type at the field. You can make any changes you want during the build too.
Just a thought, it's what I like to do and Ireally enjoy it.

Hi I have only about 15 flights on the plane, and I used a 10x7 prop wich is all I had on hand, but I ordered apc 12x4 prop today and I hope it will have more vertical performance with that prop.
