I have a heli but am looking to by a zagi. Much more durable than a heli, cheaper too. This is what I need to know. I have a Futaba 8U/FM radion and I want to use the same radio to fly my heli and zagi. What type of reciever do I need to get. Will a 3 channel work?? I hit towerhobbies page but the have 50 recievers, which one do I need. Also servos, Will regular futaba ones work or do I need the small ones. Other than the kit, charger, radio, recievers, and srevors do I need anything else???

HI,

I was in the same boat and needed a change from Heli's. Actually we have incorporated Zagi's into our heli flying by;

a) Flying combat when the heli action subsides. No streamers here! It's kill or be killed. Your opponents crash equals one kill if you can still do a controlled loop or roll. FUN!

b) Night flying. Yes before the heli night flying action starts up the Zagi's take to the air while the guys ready their night flying heli's.
Thin glo-necklaces like they use for Rave's etc are used with good results. We even had a rocket powered Zagi take off in the dark one year. Lots of fun!

Ok the trick set up for your Zagi;

1) Buy the 400x and some spare 1400ae packs direct from Zagi.
You will need a charger capabale of at least a 1 amp charge rate (preferably 2-3 amp). The batteries will last longer if you only fast charge them once a day.

2) Buy a micro Rx, but NOT a park flyer Rx. The Hitec 555 is the Rx of choice. You want to go light wherever possible. I'm using a JR610 micro with good results.

3) The Hitec 81 metal gear servos are the servos of choice. Small and light and the metal gears survive many a crash. The plastic geared servos do not.

4) Bury the Rx in the foam to one side of the radio try. If you mount it in front of the battery as the instructions suggest you WILL crush it in a crash. It's only a matter of time.

5) Use 3M 77 spray glue in the BLACK can! 3M has stopped making this formula and now sells a version in a reddish brown can (still called 3m 77). DO NOT USE IT! It will melt the foam. Good luck finding the black can stuff. Glider pilots have been buying it up by the case.

6) Buy an extra roll of colored packing tape when you buy your Zagi. You will need a contrasting colour.

7) If you have access to 2mm coroplast make your wintips out of it. The stock plastic tips are flimsy and look kinda lame.

Ditto on the Hitec 555, I fly my Zagi with one and my 7UAFS. It's a bullet proof RX IMO.

Ok let me get this right. I can use the hitech reciever with the futaba controler??? I understand they have to be on the same channel but will the 2 different products work together???? I work in an enviroment where if they are not made by the same company the equipment will never talk. (propritary software.) Please let me know if I am wrong. I do know that if someone with a different radio and same channel can make me crash bit please let me know.

Hitec makes their receivers work with all the different Tx brands. You just need to specify you want a 555 to work with a Futaba Tx.

Their servos will plug into just about anything.

Ok one more question, Is there any place I can get information on setting up my radio for the delta wing config?? and is there a zagi avail for real flight G2??? (ok that was 2 questions)

Another good source for a light weight reciever is FMADirect.com. I have several of them and they are great. You can get them to work with either Hitek or Futaba (negative shift) or Airtronics or JR (positive shift).
