Nylon Wing bolts
I notice that there is a difference between the black colored nylon bolts by Dubro and the White colored ones by GP and the hardware stores. The black ones seem to be more rigid and their fit into the 1/4 20 T nuts seem to be looser than the white Nylon bolts . When using the black nylon bolts I have to add some plumber tape for a tighter fit . I am not sure which is the the better bolt to use. any comments? Tks

i dont know if there is much difference, but i use the black ones mainly beacuae the black ones i have have a thumb grip... i also use some steel 1/ 20 wing nuts for easy grip ...i hate having to use a wrench when i can tighten my with just my bare hands
i would use what you feel more comfortable with

RE: Nylon Wing bolts
There is not supposed to be any difference in the black dubro or white GP other than head style. Black bolts from Dubro use a Hex head where as GPM uses a standard slotted head
Whether are any minor molding differences i am not sure of that. I have used both sets with no issues thus far

Size should be the same, a 1/4-20 is a 1/4-20, you can measure them to make sure there isn't a batch lot problem. I have found the nylon/plastic in black is a bit more brittle and breaks easier then the white. I like the black ones with the hex head in the center for one of my planes that has deep sockets for the wing bolts to go into but like the white ones with the nut or bolt head on them for my other planes. I buy the type my LHS has in stock and just work around any little problem I may have.

RE: Nylon Wing bolts
If they sqeek you need to run the tap through your threads in the wood.
The white ones have always been the choice of most flyers. Most of us buy them in bulk from micro fasteners, 100/bag.
They make white in all different styles and heads for the 1/4-20 thread.

my tap is what made the threads to begin with.

I like em tight, makes me feel better. I use a drill bit 1 numbered size smaller than recommended for the tap, then tap, then thin ca and let dry (no kicker), then tap again. Strong tight threads every time.
I've always prefered the white ones, and I get them either from ACE hardware or MicroFastners, both good sources.

Whichever you get, make sure you boil them is water for 15 minutes or so. It takes the manufacturing stresses out, and makes them stronger and more flexible.

Since you are cutting threads into the wood with a tap, unless you seal the threads with thin CA (then retap) any humidity changes will change the fitting of the bolts to the threaded holes. Just saturate the threads you now have with thin CA and retap and I think your problems will disappear.

I've used many different types since the 70's, never had any issues with any of them... never cooked 'em, washed them in CA... and NEVER taped them into hard wood block!
That's why God invented the blind nut... those shiny things that normally hang next to the nylon bolts.

They are bolts, screws have the pointed tip on them. Also I have never boiled them in 18 years. Dont forget to use the CA on the new threads like previously mentioned.

The boiling trick is a hold over from the nylon prop days and it does work. Just that these days buying a bag of bolts no one bothers with it anymore. Still a good trick if you are breaking them too often when installing the wing.

Think of the term nuts and Bolts.
With some exceptions screws go into tapped holes, pre tapped or self tapped and bolts go through a cleared hole and have a nut on the end of them.

My question would be more in the way of who gives a crap??? I have seen the things in bags in the hobby shop labled wing nuts. Guess you could call them thingamagiggies like my grand ma did and still be right. How about wing holdem downers?? Works for me!![8D]

i've never considered the definition of the 2. i guess it's like pornography you can't describe it but you know it when you see it. i believe the proper word is bolt.
